Ok all, its costing me a f**king fortune, but can someone suggest a reel and a rod, for Trolling/live bait/game fishing? Willing to pay upwards of 500$.. at the most.
thanks in advance. (Btw, would like it to be able to hold 200-300m of 30 or 40 pound mono) Thanks again

I just got a shimano tyrnos 20 lever drag from the fatman this morning and have put 500mt of 10kg platypus test onit and a wind on leader and there is still plenty of room on the spool , i believe you can get one for less than $300 i will be taking it out for a run tomorrow . I have a tld that i normally use but this feels like quality to me but others will have a better idea . I usually go for daiwa but for overhead outside gear i stick with shimano ...matt

The Tyrnos is a pretty good option, if you shop around you can pick up a Tyrnos 20/30 for around $270-$280 that will easily have the capacity you are after. My favourite trolling rod is one of the cheaper I have, a Gary Howard G Force 10-15kg stick. Its a great rod, from memory it was about $300 or so, maybe a tad cheaper, its been a while.

Not quite coming in at your $500 mark but not too far off. Also don't discount live fibres, they are good value, but I prefer a longer rod and I find them to be a bit soft for my liking but thats personal preference of course.

Btw, would like it to be able to hold 200-300m of 30 or 40 pound mono

IMHO, you need around 500m of your chosen line class, 10 or 15kg is heaps for most game fish. The TLD reels have been the benchmark for 20 years and do the job very well. There may be better reels out there now, but tht doesn't make the TLDs any less.

I run a TLD20 on an Angler 10-15kg rod I picked up for under $100 with 10 kg mono. Goes well.

TLD 20, with a Shimano T-curve 15-24kg should see you under your budget - just. I am not a huge shimano fan, but for what you are asking.....this fits the bill.
With a bit of change for some quality line.

Cheers

tld 20 spooled with 50lb braid sitting on a 15kg shimano backbone, & i changed the roller tip. has no problems handling anything thrown at it yet, i allways have the drag backed off while trolling & adjust the drag to what i need once the fight has started.

Tld 25 holds a %^$& load of line but at the moment I have a Pfleugar Contender G40L with 500m of 15kg Lo Stretch mono and 150yards of 50lb braid (gotta get another 150yards) on a 24kg rod.

only problem with trolling rods and reels is you need at least 4 sets...

Mate as stated a tld is a good reel , IMO the shimano tyrnos 30 matched with a shimano t curve tyrnos heavy rod would be an excellent choice for the $500.00ish mark , keep an eye out on ebay , sometimes a bargain appears there
