Posted elsewhere (in another galaxy;))
I headed up the lake on Sunday to get a few sootys that have been going off for the last four of five months. This year has been the best season for them in a decade or so with plenty of nicely conditioned fish over 40cm lurking with intent.

Had a few under the belt at about the 40k mark so set about fishing my way down stream. I could hear the thunder to the east but being in amongst the mountains couldn't see too much until I got out into Carlton Gorge, from there I knew I'd be heading into it if I kept going. Got to Coolimon Creek and decided to hunker down at the canoe camp, no one around so I booked the honeymoon suite on account it was the only one with furniture, at least the dog liked it.

After an hour of thunder close by I got on the sat phone to home and got the young fella to check the radar. Apparently one storm cell had passed by my position heading towards town with another on its tail. Not wanting to do the last 25ks back to the ramp at about 10.00pm I decided to slot in between and hope to stay in the middle. What followed was a ride you don’t often have the privilege of doing.

With the sun setting I followed the lake east for a few ks into the middle of the mess then followed it north and ran with the weather all the way to town. From Spillway down the sky was completely black except for the lightning. Ahead bolts were hitting the ground; although the show was a good one they were at least 30ks north so weren’t a worry. Behind was a horse of a different colour. Forked lightning periodically shot out across the sky passing over the top, at least twice they were close enough to see the bolts fragment and dissipate. Close to town the rain came but the trip was about done.
The storm went on for some hours, I went to sleep listening to it, come the morning and the gauge said 40mm of rain.
Always a bit dodgy on the water with lightning around but when the ipod shuffled to Rammstein’s Keine Lust at full tilt I got carried away with the moment. 8-)
