G'day Ausfishers,
A late report, but I haven't been on for a while, so it's good to make a post.
Took my new(to me) boat - 6m Lightning - for it's first offshore run on Friday, with Seabreeze showing red arrows I was looking forward to a smooth trip.
That wasn't the case, dirty chop in the bay all the way across left me feeling pretty battered when I started my drift.
I was fishing 4" Gulps on reasonably light leader (12lb fluoro), first fish was a little Spanglie, next was a 40-ish Squire which I kept for dinner and a little later I picked up a Purple Rock Cod, also about 40-ish.
I was starting to move about in search of some more bait schools and was having some big hits without hookups when this big fella clobbered my gulp - a couple of runs and some tense moments later, I lip gaffed him and brought it aboard.
My fish measure runs out at 75cm, so I don't really know how big, 80+, and it was a nice fat fish. Far too nice to keep, and I like to let the breeders go, so a few photos later I swam it by the boat for a few minutes until it powered off leaving a streak on the sounder that went all the way to the bottom in 30m of water.
Mucked around for another hour or so for some more hits and no hookups, but the wind was picking up and I headed in across a very messy Bay.
Very happy to catch fish on my first proper offshore trip in the new boat - a lot more comfortable than my tinny.
Cheers all, enjoy the Christmas season - I'm off to Hervey Bay for 2 weeks.
Mark
