You mainly need to be aware of the currency conversion rate. 6 months ago when aud was 97 US cents it was hundreds of dollars cheaper to buy a Furuno 620 from Fishon Marine in USA and have it delivered in 5 days...now it is dearer to import with the aud at 65cents US. Shop around and see.... I dont think anybody locally is consistently best..but look at BIAS and Whitworths and a lot of people here have been very happy with purchases from MrBoats who sells from Sydney on eBay..can be phoned and visited at a shop I believe and has a good rep. Other eBay sellers........well...good luck.!!
As for importing you can bring anything like this into Aust by mail if it has a value (including freight) of less than $1000 aud. I would be surprised if it is worthwhile purchasing offshore until the dollar gets back to near 80c but you just have to look around. You should certainly read the pinned post at the top of this bopard called "being ripped off".
Also think of warranty....Eagle/Lowrance have been local warranty only (return to USA) but as now owned by European Navico needs to be checked. Furuno warranty worldwide, but probably doesnt matter as they dont fail..?

you will still save $500 + if buying the Furuno 585 at todays rates from fishon, and thats landed to your door,
