Ok what do you guys think about singles for trolling lures? or would barbless trebles be a better option? Considering this for the fish and fishers safety, also i'm a big fan of catch and release so either of these would make it easier.
Would target species make a difference?
Opinions..
Cheers

mate i fish all barbless trebles (saltwater casting lures) because a don't like weeklong or any fishing trip ruined by having to go get a treble cut out...and i can get them out of trees easier.

All my cod lures have barbless trebles. It's much easier to remove the lure in tough mouths which allows for quiker releases.
Been lucky enough not to catch myself yet but they'd be better for self removal as already mentioned.

It depends on the target fish a lot. Fish with lots of headshaking are more prone to throwing whatever lure they have in thier mouth be it barbed, single or barbless.
Slower power fighters are usually a safe bet for barbless hooks.

Those of you which use barbless trebles, which ones? what are the best? looked at the Owner ST66's, they look pretty good.
I've heard singles with 2 split rings is the way to go? anyone doing this? what would be the best singles to use for trolling minnows etc..? Owner jobu's?
Here's a bit of research, worth a look if anyones interested. The guys at Nomad seem to know their stuff. Some other great videos aswell.

I did an experiment on Fraser this year when the Tailor were thick. Three identical lures, one with a treble, one with a single and one with two singles. Two singles by far the best hook up rate and also very good for releasing fish in good condition.
Just my 2 bobs worth.
Cheers.

Was that two singles on the one split ring, facing opposite directions?

We had good success with singles on the River 2 Sea killer vibs whilst in Fiji. Good penetration and hold during the fight. Here's a pic of how they were set-up, which I think is how they come standard. Bit hard to see in the pic, but the hooks were attached via a large swivel.

West Oz...
I now use singles on my bibless lures when spinning the rocks.
The Halco Max are a top spaniard lure and I rig them up with the 'Decoy jigging sergeants which have the inline eye....so they sit correctly.
Like Tim I used these in fiji as well on the troll....the hook up rate was very good.
I do still have a preference for trebles on my metals for high speed spinning though.

With barbless trebles you need to keep constant pressure when on the go with a fish. It doesn't need to be extreme pressure just constant. This prevents head shaking releases.
The Canadians & Yanks have been using single hook rigged lures for over twenty years, possibly a lot longer.
Some clever & switched on prominent luremakers such as Luhr jensen, & Lingquist Bros sent "some" lures out of there factories with only singles attached. Some also dispensed with the belly hook preferring to run a single rear hook predominantly for downrigging salmonoids.
Many of us here in Australia are too ??? [no disrespect] and it takes a long time for us to catch on.
You only need to go back to the Bill Lewis & Cotton Cordell rattle traps [now called vibes] of the 80's and the way the Oz jounos claimed fame. The same with soft plastics, many prominent journos claiming to stumble onto something new when in fact softies have been around for approximately 40 years, nothing new, same as barbless trebles & single hook rigged lures.
One does have t have a chuckle though.;D ;D ;D

Thnx mate. I also had good success with the Killer Vibes up at Gnaraloo. Just thinking if they would be as successful with lures like the Halco Laser Pro's as these lures don't come with a swivel. I think this is why the guys from Nomad use the two split rings, more room to move i spose? could be wrong. Nice spaniard BTW.

Thnx Pete. Do you just run with the one in middle and one on back? Got a fav colour with the Max lures? :P Those Decoy jigging hooks look the goods, tried any other ones? What size do you use? Think they would work on trolled minnows aswell? Just imagine how many expensive singles you would go through if you had them on metals :o haha

Two Lazer Pro's(190) rigged with Owner split rings & Decoy jigging singles. Bloody expensive doing em like this. We'll see how it goes.

I'm told this is the best way to do it.

Why not try doubles on the front and a treble on the back? Seems to allow the front treble to lay closer to the body of the lure and always have 2 hooks facing outwards instead of 1.
