I guess the "standard" 2 X Smoke and 2 X Night, but if in doubt or you come under some other regulation, then just check your States "Boaty" Website

Consider buying a laser flare and attaching to lifejacket as they last much longer and may help in a speedy recovery. They don't exempt you from normal flares but in a fast sinking you at least grab a jacket

If you are in Qld and your vessel is recreationally registered you only required to have an inshore flare pack consiting of: 2 x handheld orange smoke and 2 x handheld reds (night time).

If your vessel is commercially registered (in survey) you require 3 x red parachute flares 2 x red handheld flares and 1 x orange smoke.

All of these items are compulsory once you enter into partially smooth or open waters.

Also flares have a shelf life of 3 years and are deemed to not comply with legislation once the expiration date has been reached.

Yowie is right, 2 orange and 2 red,

I got pulled up at manly boat ramp last sunday for an inspection, the 2 cops were waiting at the ramp, they had upset a couple of hillbillies and they gave the cops a bit of stick for it about their life jackets. was a laugh for a while till ol mate hillbilly was in the water drifting across the boar ramp and couldnt get the boat started ::) , me and my deckies had a good laugh as the pajero barely pulled the trailer from the water, 3 tries to get up the boat ramp.

Anyway cops check my gear, all goes well till I get my offshore flare kit out, then the proceed to tell me that my parachute flares are better than the required red flares but are not legal in QLD, so I have to now buy an inshore kit as well, just to satisfy the QLD laws, but in NSW my offshore kit is required.

didnt fine me just gave me a warning cause I had better than required, think he was still watchin the hill billys having a picnic on the ramp.. (literally)

Going far offshore I would probably pack in a couple of parachute flares too, makes sense.

Was reading this post and something in the back of my mind told me to check to see if my flares were in date. Checked them and geuss what? They expired at the end of last month. Looks like a trip to the boat shop for a new set today. And to think I was planning to go out the front toomorrow.
