13/11
This was my first trip to Somerset in a while so it meant searching out fish. There are two other factors which affected my results for the day 1/ I had no electric motor (under repair) and 2/ It blew 20 knots all day.
I found fish suspending in Bay of Plenty and managed 1 fish of 42 cm and pulled out of two others slow rolling Evergreen Little Max blades through them. The boat was travelling to quickly even with the drift sock out so decided to go search again.
Did not find much that was fishable for me in Beam Creek or around Red Rock.
I did find fish though that I could have fished if I had the electric.
Finally located a good school of fish on the north side of Pelican Point and managed a land a couple of very nice fish out of them. I pulled out of another couple of fish and got busted by two more, one of those made the reel sing like I haven't heard in a long, long time.
I had plenty of hits but the boat was drifting way to fast and the fish were just not sticking. At some stages I was just "dragging" the lure and the boat speed was doing the rest.
Even though not a lot of fish caught the signs were excellent and I haven't seen fish showing on the sounder like this for well over 18 months. Still no electric though!
18/11 Well from last Thursday there was only one place to start the day and that was at the top of Pelican Point and at least today the wind was down to about 15 knots. The fish were there but a bit slow to start and smaller catching only 6 fish here. Decided to go search further as I could always come back to here later.
There were scattered fish on the Paddock.
It wasn't until I pushed up into Bay 13 that I found another good school in out 25 ft of water and again had trouble getting them to bite until I hooked one on a plastic. That seemed to be a trigger as they cut loose from there on and ended up with 20 + fish over the next two and half hours, mostly small but heaps of fun and I managed to get busted again when a good fish found a stump. There were plenty of hits in between fish as well.
Moved back down to north side of Pelican Point for the last hour and picked up another 10 fish, again smallish but fun.
I was on my way back up there today but with the flooding I will leave it until Monday.
If anyone fishes it over the weekend I would appreciate a report especially if it's turned bad again.

G'Day Bazza - nice detailed report mate. Just curious, 1/ Are you trolling or casting and 2/ What target species for going for there - Bass? Cheers, Darren.

Hi Darren,

I am casting mate and my target is bass. I have been catching the odd yellowbelly as well as an incidental catch.

Thanks TT,
I am back up there tomorrow and I had two days last week, I will try and do up another report by the end of next week.
I will say it has been typical Somerset with the fish running hot one day and missing the next and they seem to be moving around a lot at the moment so that is probably the reason.

Good report there.

I spent half a day in the upper reaches today (wednesday) didn't do any serious fishing as there is a lot of weed laying about. The department are spraying it with roundup at the moment.

It looks like this will be the patten we will see after each storm as this rubbish is coming off private property, up stream.

I hope that we will see it die, sink and not reach the main body of the dam.

Round Up + Fish = Fish Kill

I know what you mean MR62.

I saw a cousin of mine, had a contract to spray Blackberries ( New England area )and he killed of all the Trout in this stream. Trout that he had secretly put in himself.

I will keep an eye out. We dont have any choice this stuf must be killed off.

As a kid living around Toowoong area I remember seeing a spread of Hyasenth, ( the larger of the 2 weeds and the less aggresive ) stretching right across the Brisbane river.

Now it must have originated up in the dams and that would have looked pertty ugly from a fishing perspective.

There was a rumour running around town that this is what caused the fish kill at Moogerah, spraying then a rapid water rise. Don't know the truth of it but having been out there about 3 months later and seen them spraying it seems like it was a possibility.

I spend time on Somerset most wednesdays and they were spraying on the 3rd and again on the 10th, maybe all days between. I dont know.

No signs of fish kill at this point, so lets hope all is well.

Fitzy has been releasing a stack of fish in the last few weeks and I would hate to see a problem.

I will bring it up for discussion if I see any.

For Water Hyasenth I think they spray with kerro, or at least something that smells just like kerro, and the fish should be ok with it. "Round Up" contains Glysophate which is deadly to all fish for about 2 weeks after spraying.
