Hi all,
Have read all posts on this site re all the "Donuts!" in which I can fully understand. I was there with 5 fishing mates from 19-26 Oct, where we stayed in one of the houses on site.
We spoke with almost everyone in the camp site and they all gave pretty much the same story "No fish!" or the odd one here or there.
From the theories that people have, we came up with the same theory about the coffee looking Aelgy (spelling?) stuff in the water. What I mean is, we ventured alot on the right hand side and the water was very murky and we didn't catch or even see any fish, however on the left hand side the water was alot cleaner and thats where we caught, lost and saw plenty of Barra (Food for thought)
Anyway to the fishing, it was a loonnngggg tiring week cast after cast after cast. The water temp averaged around 25-26oC except where the front came through. A few times we found water to arounf 28oC right up in the small bays where we hooked a few and had heaps of hits. The Barra we did catch, the lure was on the side of their mouth rather than inside there mouths which might explain all the hits but no hook ups.
We mainly fished with Arafuras in the gold, and in silver and green, and in the shallower water small B52's and bommers etc. However if it was in the tackle box, we threw the lures at them. However all Barra where caught on the Arafuras (again!)
We spooked countless Barra right up in the shallow water in around 3foot of water and had plenty of heart attacked of Barra following Horny Toads.
Anywho, the old man broke his PB with his first metre plus, measuring at 106cm, he was chuffed to bits and had a smile like the joker for the whole week.
I almost beat my 136cm PB, as you can see with the photo I caught a very healthy 131cm specimen. She took me 10 minutes to get in which was probably the best fight I have had in fresh water. She took me under the boat a few times, she tried to head towards the trees as we where in fairly open water, and at one stage I was on full bore on the electric and still couldn't catch up with her. I think I need a bigger net! Apart from that I caught a 122cm and plenty of big Catties which sometimes I thought were Barra when they screamed line off the reel.
A memorable moment was when we where approx 50 metres from another boat and he was chucking horny toads and I saw this Masssive Barra chase it and smshed the lure. It was an awesome sight but he lost the fish.
We also wittnessed a small whirl wind/tornado (whatever) come through the tress in a small bay we where fishing in. It was like that monster on the program 'Lost' then it hit the water and started approx 1metre in radius but the water rose approx 1metre in the air. It was amasing to see and it looked like 10 Barra jumping and splashing on the surface. My mates other boat quickly got out of its path and it frantically kept going up the other bank.
A dissapointing trip in regards to the number of Barra not caught however very happy with the big girls we caught and as they say "A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work" We had plenty of laughs, met heaps of fellow fishers and will be back there soon.
