Awoonga 7-9-08 / 8-9-08
Got the gear together after a day at school and headed out to Awoonga for an all night session. Launched the boat at 5:00 pm with the wind blowing a constant NE across the Lake and the water temp a nice warm 27°. It had been quite a while since I have fished Awoonga with a NE blowing and I was interested to see what results I would come out with. So a few of my spots that have produced over the last couple weeks were out of the equation and I new tactic was put to work.
With a quick look at the Far side of the dam I found a bank I haven’t worked much before and decided to give it a crack. Sounded around with the electric for a while and a nice deep point leading up onto a shallow weed bed I was confident fish were holding in the area. Worked about a 200m stretch of the bank with nice weed and a few sticks mixed in. I worked it with many different lures ( Hollowbellies, Slickrigs, Storm Swim Shads, X-Raps). After working it hard for about 1 ½ hours before dark I got my first interested fish right on dusk. Stuck at it for around 2 hours just casting this one section and the fish just never turned on.
Had a few moves from spot to spot to see if any activity was happening, Pulled in behind Dingo in a protected spot from the breeze at 11:00 pm and anchored up and fished a fresh grass bed under the surface with the water temp still at a warm 26°. After a quick rest and a bite to eat we were back at it. In the same spot with the grass bed underneath the surface we had 3 casts and my mate was on. After a few jumps and a hard run at the sticks the lure was thrown right back into the boat. As this fish had some mates we decided to fish this spot till sun up. 20 mins later I was on (1st hook-up on a Hollowbelly) with the sticks about 15m away from where I hooked the fish he headed straight for them. After following him through them I had managed to somehow get him out and another jump and the leader gave way. After a quick look it was quite noticeable that the sticks had taken their toll on the leader.
After fishing the spot till Sun up a move was definite, Headed up the back to a few morning spots I have done well on before. I started to fish 3inch Storm Swim Shads to get over a shallow weed bed. I had spotted a few fish fining the surface so I grabbed out a Boof frog and had a few cast and only 1 follow. Well headed in about 8:30am as I had to play cricket otherwise I would’ve fished all day. Was a good night with 2 lost fish and many hits but once again the big Donut.
Cheers PM
