2 Questions:
Heading down to Port Stephens over the Xmas break, does anyone know if it is a requirement in NSW that the boat must have a safety chain in case of boat slippage on the trailer.
I am in the process of making one prior to the road trip anyway for peace of mind, looking at chain from the bow of the boat then a turn buckle to the tie down point on the trailer.
Any one know if this is a suitable method.

I dont know of anyone who owns a boat that would NOT have a safety chain.....regardless of regulations. I dont trust winch cables/tie downs to hold a boat, especially towing any distance. But to answer your question, yes you do need a safety chain under NSW regs, well you did when I lived there.

have found that turnbuckles come undone. And they are not particularly strong.
I now have a safety chain that runs from bow eye to winch post, and tension that with a webbing strap that runs from a link in the chain down to an eye at the base of the winch post. The webbing has an overcentre cam, and once the length is set, and the excess webbing trimmed, only the cam has to be operated -no other knots etc

to stop turnbuckles coming un done, just un screw them fully, and screw on a nut. re insert the the eyes of the buckle. then when you have tighten the turnbukle. just nip the nuts up on to it.
be good if you could post a couple more pics wahoo.

also a rope spliced to aslip shackle, for launching boat on step
ramps.

I currently have the normal safety chain that connects to the bow, just below where the winch rope hook connects onto.
looking at the other chain with turn buckle from the bow down onto a chain link that has been welded onto the trailer frame during manufacturing.
Think I will connect from the bow to the welded chain link using chain and a turn buckle with lock nuts, your thoughts on this fella's.
