Hi

I fished Wivenhoe Dam yesterday as part of a volunteer for a University of Queensland research project. Was an absolute cracker day on the water - sunny and not a breath of wind all day.

We ended up with 5 bass, most around 30-40cm, but i managed one beauty (and a PB) at 53cm and 2.4kg. All were caught trolling and away from the main schools. We peppered some very large schools with everything but none were interested in biting. Also got hammared by some mammoth catfsih (up to 5kg), which got the heart racing on 6lb string.

Cheers
Mitch

Were using a range of deep diving lures on the troll - blitz baga's, SMAK's boomerangs etc. Fish were hanging around 5-10m

Just a follow up on Mitchs original report, the uni headed out again this weekend and after 4 previous trips we finally located where the main schools were. The action was hot with lots of 50cm fork length fish coming on board. The highlight was on sunday morning after finding a school of big fish we had a triple hook up with Jens fish going 50 fork mine going 51 and Mitchs going 51 but slightly heavier.

The water is actually 23 metres deep with bass down to 15. the poor old sounder couldn't decide where the bottom was. Yep thats the fun part of research, some poor bugger now has to disect the things (probably Jen) for age and dietry analysis

Where do i sign up to do a Bachelor of Catching Dam Bass - B.cdb

Seriously though good job team.

Yeah it was a cracking session. It doesn't get much better than a triple hook up on 50+ FL bass. Thanks for the tips and advice Jeremy, was good fun fishing with you. Felt a bit sorry for Jen in the end - having to process all those bass.

Cheers

Bl##dy speciesists. Bass and spotties are very different fish but they're both heaps of fun to catch.

Do you reakon Jen wanted to do the opposite of you and swap onto the boat not getting any::) . Hows the mission for wahoo going. Did you score any on that long line? Next couple of weeks is going to be all about marlin for me so if i pick any up i'll let you know.
