Hi all,
I have always rotated my braid on my reels every 2 months or so and after i rotate my braid once i usually replace it. Just wondering if fellow ausfishers do the same or do you just leave it the same way up?
Cheers PM

Jebus, every two months! I'm more like every two years. I've had some on one barra reel for about seven years now without being rotated and it still performs fine.

Me too - I prefer braid that is at least 6-12mths old. It gets even more supple!!!
I rotate every 2-4yrs. With some maintenance, a good braid should last 4-8yrs.

Hay Mr P,

ill take your two month stuff off your hands!!!:P ;)
i change over my spin reel spools holding fireline on them every couple of months, not the braided spools tho.
just rolled over the nitlon on the zillion the over day for the first time after about 8months, and after looking at it im pretty sure its not going to get another go.

Some of the early braids (fins is one that comes to mind) that would loose colour after a couple of months i would end for end.
All the top tier braids have gone beyond this early fault and these days i dont end for end at all.Load it up and leave it on
Cheers

Im yet to end for end a spool of braid and some of mine is about 8 yrs old.
I have however transferred from a reel to another as a topshot and effectively reversed it that way, but not intentionally gone for a reversal.
Jack.
Depending on usage ...... & losses ::) I replace yearly ...... & rotate once
Rotation involves ..... going down the local footy fields - tying off .......walking out the spool - re tying & winding on under tension
does me fine

i rotate every year but every month put a mix of half water and half fabric softener in a spray bottle and give the braid spool a good dose from new it works a treat. ps take spool out or off to coat braid

Does fabric softener really work on braid?? what are the benifits in doing this??

I was just about to start a new thread but the subject i had in mind relates well enough to run on this one. I just had a tackle session where i cut some new drag washers topped up some line and rotated some braid. I just had a rude shock when taking the line off my sustain 4000. This reel is 2 years old and has been used extensively in the salt spinning for tuna and mackeral. It's clocked up 100's of fish on the same 300yrd roll of 15lb tuffline tied straight onto the spool and was due for a top up and service. So we where stripping the line off onto the spare spool and i begin to notice a few salt crystals about 100metres in, 150 metres in and the line starts to go hard and is fused to itself. Finally we get all the line off to reveal the anodised coating of the aluminium spool is severely coroded. See picture below.

the softener restores the braid when it dries out or loses its sheen and coluor

Same thing happened on my spheros 140000 and spheros 5000. It's a real pain - hard to wash all the salt after a session when the spool is full of braid. Be interested in hearing some ideas on how to minimise this problem- basically all my spin gear runs braid these days :(.

Hi fellas,
I have found that a large bucket a water after a fish and peal ur line off and wash ur line in a fresh bucket of water does the trick. it doesnt knot up as the water softens and can even add fabrc softener to the water. Works well.

reguarding the corrosion on spools i recently had an internal corrosion problem in my corudo baitcaster. the reel was sent back to shimano and repaired for free(excellent after sales service) . the reel was returned with a letter stating a product called Ballistol should be used on it periodically. so i have bought some and this shit is amazing. the service technitions at shimano use it heaps and said normal water dispersing sprays are to course for bearings. this stuff is a thin oil in an aerosol and can be used on wood, leather, fibreglass doesnt effect mono line. just google to find out more it is worth chasing up . mo tackle sell it. i have used inox lantec this stuff goes gummy and sticky, i wouldnt use it on my reels. ballistol is what i spray under my braid on spools and inside reels as well. it lubricates so well i recently sprayed it on my ram mount for lowrance sounder and even with the ram screw tightened right up the sounder keeps falling over cause of the ballistol on rams ball joints . gotta use it to believe how good it is. shano

I've had some fireline on my spin reel and have only end for end it once in I think 4yrs and cut a bit off untill it wasn't fraid (very minor just did it because of age). My line usually gets swapped from lossage on my other reels I can't seem to lose the fireline though :|

Never had these problems using mono. Don't & won't use braid. More trouble than it's worth when we look at the number of threads regarding problems with the line itself & then the problems it causes to gear.
I look at braid a little like mobile phones, WHAT DID WE DO WITH IT/THEM & our predecessors.

I have 8 year old fireline on one reel. I have replaced a few spools of line but only when it gets to be too short a length to be usefull as a top shot. I have not found the dbraids to degrade except right at the working end couple of meters
