It is a simple question, can I fish during the reef fin closures?

yes, you can do any type of fishing your heart desires, but all CRFF must be returned, including gun live bait like hussar and stripeys.
The closure is not a fishing ban, but just prohibits the taking of CRFF. Plenty of other fish can be taken though, like cobes, trevally, pelagics etc.

there's talk of cutting the reef closures back to two shorter ones next year as the green zones are doing a better job of replenishment than expected . it just amazes me that the only time the weather is good enough to get out it falls in the closure time.rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

That's nature looking after nature I think. I haven't been able to get out the reef since July. The weather has been bloody terrible up here lately.
Time to pack your lighter gear and have some fun catching reefies, doesn't matter if you lose em does it? Im sure most fisho's here fish for fun/relaxation/sport?
not just to fill the esky up. I still fish the closures and simply chuck the fish back.
You dont have to keep the fish you catch to have a good day fishing:)

That's good news..where did you hear this Ozbee???
Do you really think it's the green zones working or simply that the last couple of years have had almost continuous windy weather(at least up this way)..???

Another bit of possible good news is that there is talk that this year's closure over Chirstmas will be called off, dunno how much substance it has to it, heard it from the Bulletin's fishing bloke, Eddie Riddle.
It would make sense though, having the closures over christmas are a tourism industry nightmare, people you can only get this time of year off and a lot plan fisihng trips up here, and having the closures over that time is just industry suicide.

came from a pro fisherman after there last meeting with government it was two separate departments that brought in reef closures and green zones when introduced . they have argued why have two separate laws for the same outcome. hence gov has trouble validating the requirements for both so changes are on the horizon. bet your dollar GRMPA wont change hence state law change.

Yeah, lets hope so, I'd rather have the green zones with no CRFF closures than both. Don't get me wrong, the green zones shouldn't be there to begin with but I'd rather be limited to where I could fish than be limited to what I could take home, when the reef is a minimum 50km offshore from townsville, it makes heading out and bringing home trevally I could catch in close a not very worth while outing.

I am heading out in the morning with nothing but tuna lures and squidgees. Just need an excuse to get the boat out as working 60 plus hours a week is giving me the shits. Used them a few weeks ago for cod and stripies so i will try some deeper water and try and get some grassies (hopefully). Otherwise hopefully a makkie. Might meet a mate up at cape cap too.

Apparently. Big schools of bait up there a few weeks ago aswell. Should be a fair bit of run up there though.

Man I hope you are right,Scott...It makes no sense to have that closure....but then again when has common sense had anything to do with such decisions in the first place.
