just a heads up guys and girls
if u are looking at a new shimano rod or reel get it in the next couple of weeks because as from next month shimano will be putting there prices up by 30%.
this is due to the current aussie doller.

Not sure that will happen, the current climate is restricting people from spending money so increasing prices from say $300 to $400 is a bit like commercial suicide, especially for Shimano. It will be more likely that prices will be somewhat negotiable. The option of buying offshore is at the moment a no brainer ... for example it is cheaper to buy a Sol 2500 here is Australia than the good ole USA. Another example of this is a Certate 2500 from Bass.jp .... $594 ... I don't think so. I'm off to buy some shares!!!!!! An interesting topic this one.

Thanks
Matt

we will see what happens, but it isnt looking good.
there is another fishing site were the rep for zipbaits (japanese lure company) is predicting price rises so other companies are sure to follow
most of our gear comes from japan so if shimano japan have put there prices up so will shimano aus.

It won't just be Shimano prices, or just fishing gear that will be going up, any imported products are going to be impacted in the same way eg. outboards, electronics, cars, parts etc etc.

The AUD has plummeted approximately 30% against both the USD and the Yen in the last 3 months or so. Stock bought in and/or hedged when the rate was near parity to the US dollar will be drying up. Prices have been sneaking up on E-Bay and online stores in recent weeks. Some distributors might absorb some of the hurt for a while, but unless the AUD recovers significantly (unlikely), welcome to the new post resources boom world!!.

PS there are still some good deals out there but they are going to disappear quickly I reckon.

Cheers

Thats the nature of the WORLD we live in. If you want to play in the main stadium you have to play the best teams.....which means you are going to lose sometimes. That is the result of floating the aussie dollar on the world markets.....sometimes its strong..sometimes its weak....and we are more affected by the fluctuation because we dont have the population to warrant lower margins due to higher volumes. We are also affected by higher freight costs to get stuff here...once again due to low volumes. I will give you an example....there is a tackle shop in Hawaii that sells more Penn reels in one month than the entire Australian market sells in one year! Now thats buying power.

Yep. its all going up, and fishing gear is not the only stuff to be hit. I know an ebay seller that turns over $8000 a week, now shes gone broke because she cant import from usa and sell here cheaper anymore.

dont forget to buy your epirb before they go up too.

Does this mean that my pay will be going up by 30% to keep in line with these rises. I predict it won't.

Mate, you can only get that sort of deal if you are the Chief Executive of Telstra ... or work for yourself.

Consumer confidence is the key here. The exchange rate will result in a marked increase in the cost of imported goods thats a fact.If consumer confidence remains low and prices are high then the retail sector will suffer like never before(loss of sales and income).I feel that say a 30% increase will level out over the medium term to say 15% as retailers battle for sales at lower margins to stay viable. This is the basis of rudds handouts to pensioners and families around the xmas period.Rudd hands out the cash and its spent over the xmas break the money is then injected straight into the retail sector so boosting it in the short term.

I feel this will be a survival issue for small business in the medium term.Selling at lower margins and staying alive will be small retailers only options. This is only the beginning it will get much much worse before it gets better. This may well exceed the 1929 depression. The key to our short term survival will be the chineese market(comodities) if chinas growth drops below 7% we are all stuffed completly

I'm saving my cash for when it hits the fan.

Doesn't anyone remember the Keating recession we had to have with 17+% interest rates.

Besides I don't need any more gear.

Yes they did, during August and September Shimano had a major sale on and prices were at decade lows. You can still buy some of them at those prices on Ebay , but you need to be very quick.

I have said this before in another post.......In my opinion as a former reel fixer upper ( I owned a tackle shop specialising in sport and game fishing gear), when you compare equivalents in Daiwa and Shimano.....the Daiwa's appear to have greater longevity before parts wear out. Mind you - thats not to say that Shimano are crap.....proper servicing and care will see much longer life out of both brands....and both these brands leave most of the competition for dead when comparing like models. They are also the companies that pour most of the money into R & D, so the rest can copy!

Were they past there 10 year warranty mate, i have a Tiagra, Trynos, TLD 25, TLD 15, 2 6500 baitrunners, 4500 baitrunner, 3500 baitrunner, Spheros, and other shimano reels all mated to Shimano rods and have never had a problem yet. and many times they have been put under load that they are probably not rated to. You must be just hard on gear mate......................::)

Horses for courses i reckon...

I dont reckon Shimano are as good as Daiwa but they are streets ahead of any other tackle manufacturers...

I also have an issue with wear and tear on shiamno too. Mainly the bearings.

Dave ..... I hate being cynical , but Shimano have that sale on yearly! ....... Yes there were some good buys available! ....... but most stuff did not reflect a 35% improvement in the OZ

Be as cynical as you like Chris, I am not here to defend Shimano, they can do that themselves. I simply answered your question.

Not being much of a cynic myself, just a tight ass!, I treated myself to a heap of gear I wanted at prices we are unlikely to see again in the foreseeable future.

So how much did Daiwa discount their gear this year??

I think now is the time to be looking for tackle bargins.

all the shops and wholesalers will be trying to get rid of old stock and to generate both cash flow & hard cash.

just look arround there has been a screaming "t" curve special at the place with no name for a while now....some of the tackle stores will be stocking up with the clearance specials.

as far as the wholesalers and retailers are concerned.. if their landed cost goes up 30%...they realy have no option..... there isnt a heap of margin in the fishing market these days.

cheers
