In good conditions how far would you expect to cast a 35gm bubblepop ???
Had a go the other day and suspect my gear is too heavy.

i have a spare spool that i favour for light surface situations.
2lb fireline.
ive tried heaps of light braids and have come back to the 2lb fireline..
its effortless to punch a good cast out

Yer def the 2lb fireline crystal, best surface line imo. Casts a mile further than the sunline braids and that, it is what i use. And the 45 is better than the 35 imo (casts alot further).

I want some whiting, but will be happy if i get any hook-up, Im not much good with lures, but there are plenty of good shallow banks where i fish.

dont just limit yourself to the bubblepops..
theres heaps of different models out their that whiting will have a crack at.

What are you fishing at the moment?
I have a light burkley dropshot ( which I am yet to fish) I've been playing with a zeon 40 on it..... a have spools with 10lb mono, 6lb mono and 2lb fireline.
I threw a 15 gram lure ( less trebbles ) in the back yard with it the other day, the casting distance difference between the 6lb mono and the 2lb fire line was quite considerable ..... on 6lb I would be casting about 20meters..... with the fireline nearer to 30.
You can hear the difference...with the mono you can hear the line flogging the blank and going thru the runniers all the way..... with the fire line you certainly hear the leader.... but once the braid starts running its pretty well silent and the plug just keeps flying.......I hope to fish this rod this week.;D
cheers

yer mate the 45mm-50mm poppers are the go for whiting. they seem to get notised a lot more than the 35. most light graphite spin rods in the 1-3kg or the 2-4kg in a 6\6 to 7 foot will cover most of ya light fishing needs, pair this up with say a 2000-2500 size reel and your half way there. cast as far as ya can, a longer rod will help a lot more for this, use the wind to your advantage and keep ya movements slow, then work that popper with a mid speed retrive with no pauses, just keep it moving. the popper should be just starting to fluttering about on the surface, that when ya no ya got the speed right. then if they start smacking it, dont stop. just keep it all the same till ya feel the ting wanting to rip the rod out of ya hands. they will hook them selfs. walk the dog types work on them too, just look at meepee's post in the estuary reports. o yer get the sharpest hooks you can get, i only use owner stingers (st36) as i think they are the best you can get. good luck dude and pratis pratis pratis, you'll get it

Im using my light bay outfit,,, 7 ft daiwa pro 2-4kg , 3000 symetre 10lb braid.
Line is much to heavy for a 35mm, its pulling up at about 20 mtres.
I might just get a couple of bigger pops, rather than spend a heap on new gear.

Rando mate why don't you just get a second spool for the reel you have and load it with some 2Kg braid.
$100 should get you there without any corners cut...( as long as you buy smart).
That outfit with 2Kg braid should pull up any of the bread and butter fish.
Then you can simply change the spool and rethread for some heavier action.
I'll lay odds you will spend more time with the lighter braid.
cheers

dose ya reel have a full spool of line on it, a full spool will cast a lot further than a half filled one.

Symetre should have a spare spool. The 3000 would be a bit to big for light surface work IMO. BUT it will do the job with running 2 or 3lb fireline crystal over it. I know that The PE braid thats a blue couolr is the nicest stuff but im not keen to try it myself as anything under 6lb tends to get bad wind knots when casting, and becomes pretty exspensive when you are cutiing 30m of knoted braid :'(

I keep all my reels chockablock.:D
Loophole.
I agree 3000 feels a bit to heavy for this kind of work, thats why I was thinking ,,,"need a new reel", I was toying in my mind with something in the 1000- 1500 size, but $$$ are a bit short, so i may have to wait a while and work with what I've got.
thanks all for your advise
