I went for a quick fish yesterday afternoon not too long after low tide. Normally I fish with plastics but as my luck has been a bit down lately I decided to have a go with some bait. Barra and Jacks were the target, so mullet was the preferred lively.
First throw of the cast net and I bring up two small bream, a few herring, a baby barra of about 20cm, and a small yet very angry mud crab stuck in the bottom pocket. After untangling the mud crab and avoiding any unwanted injuries, the next cast resulted in a few mullet.
The mullet was sent back out, and I couldnt resist myself and had to have a flick of the plastics while I was waiting. Things were pretty slow until everything happened at once. I scored a nice little 35cm flathead on a squidgy flickbait - but forgot to take a photo. After releasing I got a big hit on the mullet but no hookup. Checked to see if he was still there and he was so back out, and then in comes a 25cm jack. I took a few photos and released him and hooked on another mullet.
This mullet was sent in close to the snags and as soon as it hit the water it was boofed twice but never hooked up. I wound it back in as i couldnt feel the mullet but he was still there - minus a few scales and looking a bit worse for wear. I quickly sent him back out to the same spot and he was boofed yet again as soon as he hit the water. About five meters of line peeled off until the little barra jumped clear of the water, spitting the hook and sending the little mullet flying. I estimate he would of been about 40-50cm long. I tried for another half hour to raise a barra but with no luck so I called it a day. Definately one of the better fishing trips of late - at least i caught something.
