Went out for a spur of the moment trip after lunch today with John (VIC1) in his boat to have a crack at the longtails on the placcies. We decided to head up toward tangalooma and found the odd pod of fish. We plugged away for a few hours and finally after changing plastics a few times i was the one who hooked up. It was a bit of a battle but we finally got the longtail into the boat. Obviously happy with the result we headed for home before sundown

We saw a few of those today too mate, some around the western side of peel, and some more up the rainbow channel. Got absolutely smoked by one, screaming 3 second run then ping, bitten off. In fact, if you look closely thats us on the ramp behind you! Cracker fish too mate, the ones we saw in the rainbow looked that size.

After trying all sort of plastics i changed to something a bit different and hooked up first cast, It was 4.5inch lake fork live magic shad, in albino shad. There almost identical to javallons but a lot cheaper imported from the USA. I only swam it very slowly (they have a great action) through the pod and it didn't take long for it to get inhaled.

My tuna spin gear is 'relatively' light but effective. Nitro Mag butt with a SOL 3000 and 20lb line and leader. Though the SOL 3000 now needs a new set of drag washers after that fight ;D .

:o Even better fish on that gear, i've often wondered how my sol 3000 would go with one of those on the other end.

How long was the fight and how much line did he strip?

The old SOL 3000 goes pretty well, though during the fight the drag did become a bit sticky, which had me a little worried. I actually pulled the drag apart tonight and it had a a fair bit of water intrusion (so much for water proof drag) but after cleaning and reassembling its all running well again, though I'm sure some carbontex drag washers wouldn't go astray. Ive packed 300m of 20lb braid onto mine so line capacity isn't a drama either. During the fight there was quiet a few times that it took long runs and at one stage i probably had more than half of spool out there. The fight lasted a good hour and half probably before the fish came to the boat, unfortunately (for me and him) because of its size it didn't tire too quickly even with plenty of sideways pressure and in the end was almost exhausted to death before we could get it boat side.

Yep another one caught in my boat that I WASNT connected too....::). I guess it must be something about the skill of the driver, boat positioning and all that........

By the way he weighed in at 20kg on the dot and tastes wonderful. Jay if your out there, give us a call when your next going past and pick some fillets up

John....I just might have to take you up on that. My fishing skills and time between trips is seeing me withering away. The diet of all work and no eating has seen me down 9kg in a month::) . I'll PM you where we hooked a cobia not far from you on monday.

An hour and a half fight sounds a lot more fun than it actually is....;D

The SOL 3000 has the capacity and drag to easily handle a decent tuna unfortunately I hadn't given it a service or check over in a little while and the drag was seriously sticky (due to water in the stack) so i didn't push it no where near as hard as normally would and hence the longer fight. The leader was 20lb fluro which was ample as it only had minimal wear at the end of the fight.

Mate no snapper but i'm sure that awesome longtail would have made your day.
Gee 1.5 hours you would have been getting sore arms after that session.
Good effort on a plastic.
