personally I would pull the braid off, if you have a good 100m or so of braid then add new/more backing and put your braid back on

always use mono backing! Braid can spin on metal spools

Braid usually only spins on metal spools with the heavier line classes and heavy drag settings...
4 or 6lb braid tied directly to the spool with light drag settings wont be a prob at all.

I spoke to a few people regarding this when i was spooling up my sol. The most convincing answer was from the guys at Fishead, they said 'no you dont NEED to back braid if you tie a proper knot, really tight'.
Dont know what knot they tied but they said heaps of wraps (like 10 times around the spool) before tying off and make sure it pulls down really tight. I was a bit suss so when i got home i wound over half the spool of the 20lb braid onto another reel and tried like hell to get it to spin on the spool and nothing, tried wetting the braid and everything. In the end i was scared i was gonna stuff the drag or break the braid trying.:P
I'd just throw as much of the 10lb on as possible.

The only reason I use backing on my reels is because of the cost involved. It has nothing to do with the braid spinning. When using lighter lines I dont think its an issue. I like to change line fairly regularly so forking out $80 for a 300yard spool is just too expensive. That way I only need to strip the braid back to the backing then respool. Also it only requires one knot. Usually a albright between the backing and the braid.

Yeah, for light line applications it makes sense financially to back your reels, especially if your only using it to chase bream and estuary fish that are hardly gonna take 10m off you let alone 200m::).
But if your out there throwing your plastics at tuna (like fleety is) and you hook up to an LT of a lifetime, your gonna wish you had every metre you could possibly fit on that reel. Seeing that backing to mainline knot go through the guides under heavy drag, when your hooked onto a freight train is not a nice feeling.:-[
