there may be a flattening agent similar to those used to take the gloss off paint.. or you could tape the end of the epoxy to protect the blank & hit it very carefully with a green scourer or some very fine wet & dry..

A mate just taps it with his finger when it is tacky and his finger marks leave it as a matt finish.

you can also use clingwrap, just wrap it round (don't make the clingfilm lay smooth & tight over the epoxy, give it some slack) and then whip it off again....

Thanks for the hints, will try each one on a scrap rod first.

i have a small nail polishing sanding block used to buff unpainted nails to a shine, but i got one to fix up "oops" in my epoxy. its basically a foam rectangle with 4 different grades of extremely fine sanding surfaces. used on epoxy you can control degree of shine very easily. the most harsh side gets it to a very nice matte like a sanded blank
i think you get them from priceline or something, only a few bucks

yeah wait 2 - 3 days till its dry, tape of around the resin and hit it with WET 1200 wet and dry, that take the shine RIGHT off it
