View Full Version : My favourite card.....the 3 of Diamonds

Hit the water mid afternoon today looking for some Trevors and a Queenie or two.
There was a distinct lack of bait showing on the sounder, looks like it would be a tough session.
How wrong was I!:o

Things started off slowly, after about an hour of flicking my lure, I hooked up. Nice solid fast run, didn't know what it was as it definitely fought different than the norm. After a solid little fight I was stoked to see a nice 48cm Diamond Trevally slide into the net. ;D
You beauty, I love these fish, my favourite fish to catch.

After the mandatory mug shots, off he goes, and swims away nicely.

Start flicking the lure out again..............tap, tap, I'm on again. This fish feels similar to the Diamond I just caught. :-/
A screaming run had the 1000 stradic singin' the high notes. Another dogged fight
and another Diamond hits the net! This fish went 50cm. I'm happy!;D

More mug shots, and off he swims.

How awesome is this I was thinking, 2 Diamonds in a session.

Anyway, out goes the lure again, nothing happens for an hour when I get that tap, tap and watch my lure being played with. Whack, I strike and I hook up.
The stradic is in pain, squealing as this fish runs and runs and runs. I had to chase it with the leccy to get some line back!
I finally get everything under control and the circling and head shaking starts.
I actually called this for a GT, but no, I slide the net under another Diamond!!!!:o
This third fish went 54cm.
Ha ha, I'm pissing myself laughing thinking can I get another one?

I shouldn't be greedy, 3 in a session's enough!;D :P

Out goes the lure and after a couple dozen casts I hook up. This fish is definitely different, certainly not a Trevally. An undersize Jew hits the deck of the boat, at 43cm, he gets a reprieve and is swimming again.
I landed another little jewie, at only 35cm, he was someone elses capture as he had a tag in him!:) I'll pass on the details to fisheries tomorrow.

It was just on dark now, so I tied on a popper.
I saw a swirl and cast right next to the boil. Bloop, bloop, I'm on. You beauty.:D
Another hard running fast fish, the line started to arc up and he explodes out of the water. Queenie. After 2 jumps he buggers himself out and is easily netted.
Not a bad fish at around 56cm. I kept this fella, I've never eaten a Queenfish before so we'll see how he goes on the tooth.

All other fish released, great session for sure that one, I was back at the ramp at 6.15. Awesome!
Love those Diamond Trevally!;D

It's good to see there's a healthy population of Diamonds up here.
They seem to be hanging around a bit longer this year and also the size seems to have increased a tad from last year as well.

Just keep at it mate, keep a diary, jot down all relevant details when you get home.
It all comes down to time on the water.
Also, I'm lucky I've got a good job and a good missus.;D

They look trick, nice fine tail too. Does the tail get a good fluttering action or is it fairly stiff?

Jeff, thanks for sharing, excellent pics, and a top session!
Appreciate you sharing the info on that lure. Interesting looking lures, and how did you come across them, ie, did you see them in the shop and say they look the goods ?
So often people seem to be following trends in lures rather than eye balling them in the shop and having a think about how they would present in the water

Bloody good effort mate, and how was the Queeny ?

The tail flutters beautifully. They are a very soft placcy and rip easily, normally one fish per lure. They're dynamite. They are hollow, I'm using very little weight on the jighead, 1/8 is the heaviest I've used on them. Being hollow, you can add your own scent and "berley" to them, this oozes out of the open tail, and also adds extra weight.
A little bit more preparation, but I'm using a syringe filled with my special berley paste and filling the lure up a bit.

Dids, Got them from Barra Jacks at Noosaville, but I'm sorry, I think all of those type are gone. See Ben.
I actually bought them for floating into a snag for the jackies, but they've been working on the trevors like a charm.
I've only got 1 box left, I've gotta save them. I think they've stop makig them?

Cheers.

Thanks Dirty, They've been in the shop for ages, but for some reason I don't think they sold too well.
Saw them in a clearout bin a couple of weeks back, thought they'd be good for drifting into a snag for jacks.
When I was playing with them at home, I thought I'd experiment with them and fill them with "bait".

Queenfish was very, very ordinary. Very firm and tasteless flesh, last one I keep.

Still some left at Barra Jacks....In that exact colour.

They are a hand poured plastic are look great but I think they werent over popular due to them being quite expensive.

Shame to hear the Queenfish was average :(

How do the Diamond Trevs cook up ? you don't hear of too many people keeping any, are they too pretty for that, or protected, or just taste like old boots ?

Great Effort there Jeff. They are a beautiful looking fish too, I caught one much smaller in the Noosa river many years ago and I was stoked even though it was only around 25cm! The Noosa River is a great place to fish. I caught my only ever Stargazer there too :) I always wondered how good eating a Queenie is and now I know. Thanks for the great pics!

Dirty I don't know and will never know what a Diamond tastes like.
For me, they are similar to the Mangrove Jack, the fact that they aren't a real common catch, they fight pretty well and look beautiful. They deserve to be returned. I don't know how you'd cook them anyway, too skinny to fillet, you'd have to bake them whole.

Now try and hide as much of those digits as possible on your next pics and you'll see what a difference it makes.

Yeah Dave I know, was in a bit of a rush to get them back in the water, they were grunting and flipping around........... thanks mate.
