gee, this is really pretty hard to answer (at least by me). It depends on the application really ..... horses for courses so to speak. Line is constantly being improved, modified and discontinued.

I look for thinness for the poundage first but also limpness. If it flops like cotton thread you are on to a winner (JMHO). Forget anything that has a memory!

In most situations, line that is not to stretchy is preferred, let your arms and the rod do the work. Bites etc are much easier to feel on low stretch line.

Colours are useful in some circumstances but I wouldn't rate it as a priority in line choice.

Line is an essential piece of kit so price (at least for me) is not a priority. If the line has the qualities i look for then I am happy.

probably a lot more, but thats mt .02 cents worth.

Good luck

My line of choice has been Maxima for many years. Like nearly every monofilament though it will develop memory with age and need replacing. I change my monofilaments about every two years or so as a rule.

For a high vis light mono I prefer Stren Gold if you can locate some.

Jack.

For bottom bashing we only use schnieder, very tough even when roughed up. For floating baits i like Tortue Nacrita, a tough line that is much softer and finer than the schnider but about 3 times the price and not as abbrasion resistent.

Why use mono when you can use BRAID! lol

Na but if I had to use mono cost there was a world wide shortage on braid I would lean towards berkley trilene or Platypus.

Mustad Ayaka is a very good product that is being accepted well by the egg beater boys around here (Nth NSW),it feels different to most other monos in texture,is low stretch and has very little memory,it comes in an opaque light green coulor.

I am another Platypus Platinum fan. I have used it for years without any issues. Have also found the Diawa lines good quality and value as well.

Cheers

My line of choice has been Maxima for many years.

Jack.

Have to agree, Maxima is hard to beat. I've been using it for over 20yrs & never had any problems with it.

Ande is another I use along with Platypus Platinum & if it's still available Daiwa Super Shinobi is very good.

I have a few favorites that I tend to use.

Platypus platnium, 50lb on my 24kg bottom bashing rig. Good diameter means more line on the spool and is quite tough.

Platypus Low strech 30lb on my lighter bottom basher, good diameter again (put a full 500m on my Tekota 700) and have good feel for bites ( was only in about 55m at the time)

For my estuary gear (10 - 12lbs) have used Platypus super 100, schnieder, platil and maxima. I have had good life out of all of these with good strength, wear and ease of use on an alvey ( they have not tended to twist and tangle like some others). My father has a couple of older alveys with schnieder on them one is probably 20lb and the other is most likely 10lb or so, this line would have to be about 25years old. After all this time it is still very strong. Neither of us are able to get the heavier line to break with our hands, he still fishes with it on tailor and spotty mackeral and hasn't been busted off due to line weakness. Even trying to break the lighter line will cut into the fingers before it breaks if you don't get a real good hold of it.

Some of these brands are dearer than others, like the schnieder but in comparison to other costs it's nothing. For me a mono that I find is good is worth the extra $$ and anyway mono is not expensive anymore.

Cheers

Platy platinum and pre-test fan here also, Sunline make a superb mono but it is xxy, Tortue is excellent, Maxima is very tough, but lately I have been buying some mono off Ebay that I have been very, very pleased with for the price. Tough, fine diameter and very low stretch, a large Ebay fishing gear retailer sells it out of Melbourne, I have used the yellow, the green and the red varieties and truly I cannot fault it for the price atm.
Cheers.

Have always used schneider (Klear) for most applications and can't fault it Childers. I've dabbled with most mono available (mainly when can't get schneider) and found fault with most of them and always go back to schneider.

Low stretch Platypus- extra line capacity due to diameter

Up to 15kg, I use Momoi with any type of Platypus line as my second choice.
25kg & upwards, I use Schneider.

I'll put in another vote for Platypus Lo-Stretch, it's great for bottom bouncing.

I have used Platypus Platinum for a few years now on my Alveys and have been very hapy with it overall.

I recently purchased a new 6.5" and spooled it with Schneider (Klear I think - the line is a bright blue colour) on recommendation from the blokes at Tackle Warehouse and I'm reasonably happy with it. It seems to be a tougher line and comes of the spool nicely. Don't quote me, but I think it has a larger diameter than the Platypus in the same breaking strain (15lb).

I hope to test the stretch of the Schneider line on some big Fraser Island Greenbacks in the near future... (in 8 days time to be exact;D)

Greetings all!

Platypus Platinum up to 30lb and Schneider above.

Fishing off the rocks, Stren Lo Vis Green Original for its abrasion resistance (and thin, when compared to Schneider).

Regards, Rob.

For my money it's Tortue been using it for close on 35 years. I have tried a lot of others, dear and cheap but always end up coming back to "Tortue"

i go for platy platinum. I don't do alot of fishing with lures off the rocks yet. But i use it for my bait work. It has fairly low stretch and really good abrasion resistance. the abrasion resistance isn't the best. Shneider is great for withstanding rocks, but stretches alot and is very thick.

cheers

I am in the same boat a bit, tried a lot of different ones in the Surf including Braid, (Don't use braid on an Alvey) especially in the surf.:'(
I find it interesting a lot of people are happy with Platypus Platinum especially on an Alvey. I would like to know many times they cast it before having to pull 50 metres off the end and throw it away. Maybe I just got a bad reel of it, but I think it is crap on the sidecast.
For the Alveys I am starting to think the cheaper stuff is better, as someone said Jarvis Walker about 5 bucks for 500 metres, you could do worse but I still think the only good bit of fishing gear Jarvis Walker makes is a Cap.
I tried Diawa Sealine last trip to Fraser, pretty happy with it, had both 15 and 20 pound line and the 20 is probably the best for the surf, with the 15 being a bit thin.
20 Pound Diawa has a smaller diameter than the 15 pound Jarvis Walker.
When you are in the shop buying it, wrap a few feet of it tightly around your finger and the take it off, if it stays coiled up its going to be crap on the Alvey, if it goes back to almost straight by itself it should be OK.8-)

Fished Diawa Sealine off the rocks at Lennox Head. Absolutely useless! After a few casts the end 20m was rough and frayed.

This line may be all right for the surf? but near rocks it gets so damaged that it cannot be relied on IMHO.

Got sick of cutting the end 20m off and setting up again. Not easy when you are standing on a smallish rock in the dark.

Regards, Rob.

Sea Hunt, just a thought regarding your line twist problems (?).
Have you tried getting the twist out after each fishing session by taking the end of the line(after cutting off the rig) and running say 100m up the beach, droping the line, then winding line back on(unweighted)?
If you don't already, try giving it a go it will give your line heaps more usable life.
Cheers.

I have just reloaded all my reels with daiwa 5 kg line and do a fair bit of beach fishing. I am very disapointed with it due to twisting, have changed swivels etc but still comes in a bloody mess, am not impressed and am about to toss it. Interested to know if anyone else having trouble.
