Question: If you had to use only 1 bream lure (soft plastic or hardbody) to fish around oyster racks in a NSW winter, what would you choose?
Thanks in advance,

After my last foray on the Brissey River, I'd have to say the smallest Prawnstar in the pink colour. I'd still have it, but wasn't all that keen to go for a swim in the sewage outlet to retrieve it. Call me soft if you like.

Hi Spelchek,
Soft? No. I'd do the same, although I almost flipped my kayak the other day trying to retrieve a snagged lure just below the surface. It's amazing how attached to your favourite lure you can become!

Im going out on the weekend to an oyster lease also. Ive got the sx40 ready, but my question is, do i tie my braid to a mono leader just before the lure, or can the braid go stright to the sx40?
Hey Gorms83,
You should use around a rod length of mono or flurocarbon leader. These have better abraison resistance than braid and are harder for the fish to see, although with some rack bream abrasion resistance won't matter - they'll smash you what ever you throw at them.
I use an improved Albright knot to tie the leader to the braid and a loop knot to tie the lure to the leader. For the racks I would think you would need around 8 - 14lb leader (or maybe more).
Hope this helps.
Cheers
John

Cheers JT.
Is it wrong to use a small snap swivel at the end of the mono to allow a quick change for lures, as well as a tiny bit of movement?

whats the big tip on cating the sx40 Lure. I really struggle with getting any distance from it, with bream being easily spooked i struggle getting into 'the zone'
or do you guys let the lure drift into 'the zone ' and then bring it back ?

Gorms as JT states, you wanna use about a rods lenght ( i use slighly less) of flurocarbon leader. When fishing racks I would use at least 6lb leader, maybe even 8 or 10. Do not tie the braid straight to the lure as the fish can see braid easily in the water. Bream ar fussy at the best of times, so presenting a natural looking lure is essential. As for the snap swivel I personally never use them. Swivels negatively effect the action of the lure. They mess with the boyancy of the lure as well. It takes a little longer each time you change but it is well worth tying your lures directly onto your leader.

Fishawn it may be the rod your using that is causing you the casting difficulties. To cast small hard bodied lures such as sx40's around effectively your gunna need a 2-4 kilo rod around 7' long. These rods a specifically designed to throw light weights the maxium distance.

Yer real light gear, i use a gloomis dsr820 with a shimano aspire 1000, 4lb braid and 2 or 4lb leader. With this gear i can cast far as!!!!! and catch heaps with the lure. You really need pretty good gear to cast the light lures
At the moment ...... The Squidgy Pro Lobby in Wasabi8-) . It is without a doubt the most consistent lure or plastic I've ever used:) Winter 08 will forever be known as "Lobby time"

Im almost using an identical setup cept with a shimano raider rod and penn 1000.
May have to just keep trying the sx40's rather than givingn in to plastics.

Thanks NAGG,
Got some of these the other day - they look very fishy. What do you recommend as the best method for fishing them (e.g. type of jig and retrieve)?
Thanks in advance,
