Kyle (KH15) and I embarked on another pre-dawn run to Peel Island yesterday. With a westerly blowing it was a bumpy ride across but we knew that our favourite drift would be well sheltered.
Kyle was quite keen to try out his latest soft plastic - a 5" jerk shad in cajun chicken colour. While I'm still sorting myself out five minutes after we arrive, I hear a quiet "I'm on" from Kyle. A long tussle with an angry fish bent on escape finishes with a 36cm Maori Cod in the net - a new PB for Kyle!
In the next half hour he manages similar sized estuary cod and gold-spot cod! Meanwhile I am yet to get a hit. I've been snagged once and had a viscious air-knot to sort out! Suddenly my second rod (a deadstick with a zoom watermelon flickbait) goes ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ but by the time I put down my other rod to pick it up the fish has dropped the plastic - damn!
And that was the pattern for the morning. Kyle regularly brought aboard all types of fish including more cod, venus tuskfish & flathead. I kept missing bites and getting snagged, however I did manage a small flathead and a grinner! Bait that was everywhere last week was scarce yesterday.
After the tide changed and began to run in Kyle got a great hit on his ultra light gear and managed to pull in a fat 41cm squire - a new PB by 1cm and our only squire for the day! A great effort on 2lb line and 6lb leader....
A great father/son day.
All in all he completely outfished me! Ah well, there's always next time...
