Basically the Queensland DPI&F want to commercially harvest between 10 and 16 tonnes off our beaches per year. Have read.

Then, I have made a reply to DPI&F here :-

feel free to use any or all of this to assist in your response.

cheers

Harvesting 16 tonnes of pipis a year from Stradbroke Island would have a significant impact on the fish population. I can't imagine that would be "Sustainable". How many pipis to the tonne, I wonder.

As much as I hate admitting it, we might need the help of the Greens here.

(God, I can't believe I said that);D

But we might.

Greedy, destructive morons.. I can just imagine the tractors driving along Woorim beach where there are usually a abundance of Eugarie and ripping out sandworms, small crabs and every other bi-product living there... Australia is turning into a small USA, where the rich $hit all over the poor... I will bet that this crap will be approved and go ahead.. Just like the Port phillip bay dredging

Heya Phil

Thanks for making this issue more prominent and putting in the hard yards on the letter.

I have pinched another letter from the BFO site which outlines a few of the problems with commercial pipi fisheries and their habit of crashing stocks as well as a few other things that might be of interest.
http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?t=135594

Don't forget these are just the initial permit requests, as the DPI site states,
"Further applications: Several other persons have expressed interest in the proposed developmental fishery however formal applications have not been received to date. It is anticipated that further applications will be made during the next three months."

This is just the dipping the toe in the water process to see if anyone notices what is going on. Once they get their foot in the door it's all over and the initial 26 tonne will turn into big numbers.

Hope if it goes ahead the amount doesn't increase in time but we are dealing with a corupt system, as seen in the past with the DPI anything is justifiable when given ideology above all reason.

26 tonne may sound like a heap although by individual number or % biomass of the whole it may be slight, consider that this removal will be over an entire year (I surmise) whereby 2000+ tonne of pipi biomass/individuals may well have turned over naturally across all of stradies beaches.

Without some logical comprehension as to the true state of play we run the risk of behaving and justifying to the level not higher than the radicals that have seen green zones introduced/expanded.

I heard they once did this on 7 mile beach down near gerrora and they absolutly raped the beach, with respect to tonnes i don't know the comparison, all the fish left because there was no food. I would certainly hate to see this happen, as i'm only 18 and am a passionate beach and rock fisho. All i hope is that if they actually do get approval to take pippys, they do it highly sustainably. Nevertheless, if they do it, i encourage all to write a letter to your local member of gov.

cheers

It's always the same.. Queensland is a naturally beautiful state with sunshine most of the time and very nice bush and beaches.. But gradually it is being turned into an over populated state run by capitalists... I have no room to talk, being a l Mexican.. But I still respect the environment and just see more and more rules being relaxed to sell off your (our) state bit by bit.. Hope I have passed on by the time it turns into a Melbourne or Sydney...
I do feel sorry for genuine Queenslanders who are being screwed...

>:( >:( :-[ brainless government clowns, when will they join the real world. they set all these catch size limits in the name of conservation yet they propose this ,we will have to explain to them that fish eat and by removing a food source it could just maybe (you think?)affect fish stocks that feed in the surf zone and all others in the food chain .what impact on worm stocks? or are they going to harvest the pippies by doing the pippy twist?Bloody clowns without logic or commonsense. Im currently attempting to communicate with our transport on another matter and as I pointed out to them if Qld is the SMART STATE GOD HELP Australia.Maybe some of the transport boys have been transferred to DPI Fisheries.time for a change of Goverment these blokes will be the end of us.
