I have a seafarer Viking 17.6 old model I wish to repower the boat with a good reliable motor.

I have been looking at the suzuki range I am not sure on wether to go the 115 or the 140.

With the price of fuel rising fuel consumption is a consideration, I know the 115 will cost about 60 liters per 160klm trip.

I dont know however how the 140 will go with fuel economy.

I am conserned the 115 four stroke wont have a enough punch for bar work. It will be mainly run off shore.

What would you do??

i couldnt see the 140 chewing much more then the 115 not so much that it would put u off goin out..

i personaly would go the 140, if your going to do long range trips the 140 probly would be more economic anyways because you wouldnt have to sit on high revs to get a good consistent speed plus youve always got that extra punch to get you out of trouble on the bar! nick

Go the 140. It is the same engin block as the 115, so no extra weight gain, and now they are running the same gear ratio so you can swing a bigger prop, before the 115 were able to swing a larger prop than the 140, but since they have changed the ratios it is a far better motor, as far as engin capacity gooes the suzuki will out do nearly most in that range, ie honda, yamahas. and fuel economy will be better with the 140 as you aren't running as high revs to acheive the same spped you would on the 115.

Brett, you can never have enough power. 140 in the 4 stroke.

Cheers,

Tim

agree with the 140 you can always ease of the throttle a bit, then it will chew less feul then the 115 going full revs

Better to have a little too much power than not enough going through any bar!!!

Go the 140 suk.. It's the same weight as the 115 Suk, and it is lighter then the 140 Opti.....

The Suzuki 115 and 140 share the same gearing, basically the same bore and stroke, and the 140 is a 2.044 litre engine as opposed to the 115 being 1.950 litre engine.I'm pretty sure Kerry brought it up that Suzuki pulls 25 hp from the 94 cc? The 140 has a 5600-6200 WOT, where as the 115 is 5000-6000. I think the 140 and 115 at a standing start would be minimal, but in saying that if you are concerned with bar work the Optimax could be the go.

Also, a side note if considering the 115 Opti, over the 135 opti, is that when Propeller Magazine did a 115 shoot out, of 11, 115 hp engines, on 11 identical boats the fastest after a 10 sec hole shot was the Suzuki, at 32.6 knots. Bearing in mind that the 115 Opti is a 3 cylinder 1524cc engine. I suppose everything you read you have to take with a grain of salt though. As everyone says, go with a dealer you trust as all of the engines are good.

Hope this helps

nowornever,

Go the 140, make sure you buy the engine with a solas 4 blade 14*19 overdrive prop to get the best performance, I havent updated my old post yet but I have done some significant prop testing on my suzi 140.

I have tested 9 different props to get close to where I want to be, i also have fuel data if you want it. I have a Yalta 555HC which is a 6mtr glass boat, I now am averaging 2.055 k/s per litre with the 140 ( that is offshore conditions, and have repeated the results).

Inshore average is around the 2.2 to 2.5 range.

The swinging a bigger prop recommendations do not work, I have tried just about everything available and have recorded the data on each. I have also been in touch with another guy who has struggled to prop the engine as well, there seems to be a myth that you can chuck a 21 pitch prop on the engine as it has a higher gear ratio. No one has any data to prove this, infact mine and the other guy I mentioned data clearly indicates that this is not true for both performance and economy.

Pm me if you want the figures.

Hey there

I had the viking till not long ago and if you are going to do any bar work you want to go with the 140 four stroke.
The 115 in the suzuki is gutless I have heard though the 115 in the yamaha is punchy but considerably more expensive.
I guess it comes down to personal preference.
I just put up with the two stroke.

Happy fishin
