I was one of the 50 boats out front of bribe yest.
About 11am, i heard a noise and thought a dolphin.
I looked around and about 100metres away saw big brown thing on top of water and moving slowly towards me.
I first thought what a monster turtle.
It kept moving and when about 50 metres away, it was real big just below the water but had big flat tail about 2met wide.
Still not real sure i grabbed the camera took a quick shot as the tail gave a quick splash and down it went.
It was gigantic.
I then thought baby whale.
I downloaded the pic on computer when i got home and all u can see is the splash, and a bit of brown shadow in front. because by that time of day it was glass conditions.
I would have a guess that length was about 15-20ft. but never actuall came out of water, only the wide flat tail
I was in 15 ft of water.
Any one else see anything.
And i wasnt drinking.

Cheers

Yes, their tail is flat and they are quite common in the bay. I've seen many in the Bribie passage over the last few years. They are a bit more difficult to spot than a dolphin because they don't have the high dorsal fin that makes the dolphins easy to identify. They're pretty hard to see in the murky water of the passage but you some times encounter them in the clear water over against Moreton where you can get a good look. They are a lot longer and thinner in the body than the manatees in Florida which are the ones most commonly seen on TV
