Hi Guys

I am unsure of the fuel to oil ratio on my 1999 90HP Johnson.

I have been mixing it at 50:1 but it seems to be a bit smoky when starting and a bit fumey when going slow.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

400 ml per 20lt ULP

Smoke is good at start up, it wont wear out as its getting plenty of lubrication. Isnt your motor a VRO anyhow? If so why dont you use the VRO.

The VRO was disconnected when I got the boat and have never bothered to use it.

When you mix up the oil/fuel are you mixing the oil with around 1litre of fuel and shaking before adding to the tank??/ otherwise the oil will go directly to the bottom of the tank and be sucked up as a rich oil mixture at some stage.

THe other reason for lots of smoke on start up is that the fuel will evaporate in the carbies whilst its waiting for the next trip.. you take her out and fiull with more 50:1.. so the carbies get more 50:1 plus the residual oil that did not evaporate.

Personally smoke on a 2 stroke is good :).. no smoke... "BAD" :(

The old girl has a 120lt tank, I usually add 25lt then pour in 1lt of valvoline 2 stroke and top off with the last 25lt to mix then its a 10 or 20klm trip to put it in the water.

ithought it should mix in pretty good by then, but i understand the evaporation, just never thought of it before thanks

After a lot of experimentation with oils back in the days of having to premix oil for the old tinny I discovered that some oils seem to create more fumes than others. These days I just use one oil which is Quicksilver. Still smells like a 2-stroke but at least I am not choking on smoke as I used to.

I have a 115 03 jono and the VRO is off. I mix at 50:1. A bit of smoke on start up but thats about it. Apparently VRO is an acronym for Very Rarely Operates;D
