I'm looking at installing a removable live bait bucket in my boat. I want to have a bottom inlet for the pump, can anyone tell me if bilge pumps have a diaphragm to stop water syphoning out of the tank. If i use a water pick-up on the base of the pump do i just leave the pump running when i'm underway.

no, it will drain out, best off to have the water inlet on the top and make up a nozzle sort of thing, best bet is to have a pick up sort of "scoop" for when you are moving, the pump will be out of the water when on the plane, I have not used a pump for years now, reckon they are too much trouble, just a scoop and a bucket for when you are stopped, make sure the over flow is a good size, you will get a lot of water forced in when moving.

hey jerson

my inlet hose goes down to the bottom of my tank it is fed by a 500gph rule pump on the transom,i had to fit a one way valve in line between the two to stop the tank emptying out when the pump is off.

cheers scotty

Either that or get a plastic irrigation tap from bunnings and shut it off when under way.

I have a catalogue that has a pick up that takes a rule pump, it says the water is forced into the pump when underway, the pump must be running for this to work.
Nofrills, great idea with the valve.
Noelm, would a 50mm pvc pipe cope with the overflow.
Noelm - Cheech, I must be getting old, looking for set & forget.

Hi,

I found all this out the hard way and ended up putting a plastic tap from the local retic place on mine.

Maybe a top inlet is the go, if i run the inlet pipe from top to bottom with a 6mm breather hole in the inlet pipe close to the top, that should break the suction when the water drops below the hole. This is half the fun of owning a boat & fishing.

You could do this http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?t=132451 just tip them into a bucket when underway, when you stop put them in it again.

Dogsbody, i used something like that but with a 50mm foam lid cut to size & held in place with a strap, the best part was the basket wasn't perforated 150mm from the bottom, just put it in the boat & the fish stayed in water.

thanks
