G'day all

I have a 2 year old 20hp 2 stroke Yamaha that can be a pain in the ass to start. Once its going it will restart without a fuss and runs like a dream. No difference straight after a service (new plugs etc) and pretty much done it since day dot. I figured that it must be flooding due to my start up procedure but have tried all manner of things including giving it a few pulls before using choke, squeezing the fuel bulb less, squeezing it more!, running it dry before the next outing, leaving fuel in the carby etc etc etc.

Ive owned a few small Yammies before and never had this problem. Has anybody got a remedy for me?

Regards

Thats it I think wags.
Its usually awhile between trips when I'm up north. Out at Tarong at the moment so the bloody things got no excuse cause it gets a run weekly.

What sort of choke does the yam have?? A butterfly choke in the throat of the carb or a little piston pump like the Evinrudes?

I would rather a butterfly choke as it is less prone to deliver the wrong dosage of fuel.

Are you running standard plugs or surface gap plugs?

I have been running surface gap plug in my evinrude for near on a thousand hours now and still like new. They do not seem to suffer with flooding like normal plugs.

Check the hose connection to the motor, excess movement can let the line suck air instead of fuel.

Jack.

owned a 04 20hp same thing.dont pull before choke;line the arrow up on the tiller;pull once on choke;keep arrow lined up(it will go back by itself);pull again it should go or cough;pull couple more times only with arrow lined up-no choke;;;;;;
if you flood it,they are a nasty thing to get going. they dont like the cold.
cheers

Do you have the throttle opened to the start mark? this advances the timing, on mine , if its not at "start" or even a bit more it will not start no matter how many times I pull it, ::)

anouther thing that hepled mine was to make sure ALL ground conections are clean and tight

My suggestions are based around my 25hp, 2 stroke, twin carb.

Engine down so the carbs are level.
Fuel line bulb firm.
Line up the throttle to start.
Pull choke full on.
Pull start rope until it coughs or starts.
If it starts, push choke off after 20 seconds.
If it coughs, push choke off and keep pulling.

The throttle position will often slip back so check it's positioned on start. Also, I never run the motor out of fuel.

Cheers
