Went out to Macleay today around lunch, bit windy but not too bad once we got over to the island. First few drifts, not much apart from a couple of half-hearted taps.

Monday I had my turn, today it was my brother chris's turn. Again, automatic mode, rod in the holder, bang off it goes. A few big runs, big thumps and after a brief fight up comes a 72cm model, still a bit green at the boat and it took another short run. Scooped up quick second time at the boat side.

Don't know what line and leader he used, but it was caught using a 1/4 3/0 TT jighead with a mango ripple craw gulp, 2:15pm catch.

My catch from monday had already been eaten, so this one came home too.

Drifted several more times afterwards, I managed only two very small snaps, and chris scored another at 45cm that went back.

You guys are on fire :o

Nice snap, especially for that hour.

I think you've started a new trend your gonna see all over the bay this weekend, kick back with the rod in the holder and let the fish come to you ::)

Cheers mate. Actually after this catch, we started talking about how both this catch and mine were on smaller lures, and how we hadn't had many fish interested in a jerkshad of late, but during the warmer months they took them no worries. Maybe a summer/winter thing?

Today was the new moon but this was a couple of hours after moon above and the peak bite time as per nuggets website. One similarity between this and my catch on Monday is that they were both close to low tide on the last of the run out.

Another similarity, with the rod in the holder, the line was out behind the boat on the drift but it was being pushed along by the run out towards us, so it wouldn't have been lifted in the water column, but allowed to sink naturally I suppose.

What was the reason for using 1/4 jig head?

From nuggets site again, todays run out was 60% of the years biggest, so quicker tidal flow. Also wind and tide were going in almost the same direction so the extra bit of weight help keep the lure deeper while we were being blown across the surface fairly quickly.

Yeah we'll have to see how the weather goes, went out this morning again, only one little fella, then the wind came up and we had a wet ride home. Gets pretty messy that stretch between Macleay and Viccy point.

What by catches do you get?

At macleay targetting snapper with plastics, bycatch we have found is the inevitable grinner, but not too many of them around. Touching the bottom every now and then will find you catching a sole, or flathead, maybe a cod. Closer to the shallow reef and you could get a grassy maybe.

There are a few squid about there too, sometimes one will hook itself up while chewing up your lure. I haven't seen one for a while but we also used to get some of those giant toadfish, that was during summertime though. I've had a couple of stingrays grab the plastic. If you are really unlucky your hook might catch the shell of a turtle, there are loads of them around. You might get sharked during the warmer months too.

You'll also be in with a chance for some tuna or tailor when they move through. Usually when you are using a specific technique to target a specific fish, you dont get much bycatch at all though.

Mark

We usually fish in depths 5-10mts, havent fished ironstem in a long time, haven't done well there before. When we first tried Macleay, we got fish drifting around Thompsons Point, south from ironstem. These days we dont go much further than the moorings.

Geez Simon, you are having a ball out on the water over the last few days. You probably should pitch a tent on Macklay, I'm sure a property owner of one of those mansions wouldn't mind;)

Your knowledge from the last week catching Snapper could start a book!!

Well done!

2 in one week Well done. That far south in the bay too. The rod holder trick works well when the fish are very timard.
