flathead retrieves?

hey guys

angled my first flatty 2day probably luck anyhow waz wondering wat the best retrieve is for em the retrieve i waz using 2day wa 3 quik sharp jerks off the bottom and letting it sink back down is this retrieve good enough? is there a better 1?

any help appreciated

pretty useless post... you could also try slow trolling larger placcies with big tail action (wrigglers or paddletails)

Don't just stick to that one retrieve.
Try just moving the tip a foot or so with no jerks, try 2 jerks, and for some types of plastics (grub tails, paddle tails) try just a slow wind back over top of weed.

IMO every type of plastic has a optimum retrieve you just have to find out what works for you and the plastic your using. By the way i don't think there is a wrong retrieve for flatties just have to keep it near the bottom.

if you're lures on the bottom doesn't matter what it looks like or how its moving they will eat it

flathead aren't fussy, the biggest thing is getting your lure (or SP) to the bottom, they are just about as easy to catch as saying "just put it infront of their nose" and you'll get a hookup. just remember they are lazy, get the food to them and they will do teh rest of the work.

i've caught them on a wonder wobbler when chasing salmon... this proves that they will take anything.

I have heard that it is better to use a jig head that is to heavy, and drags along the bottom to create some stir... Is this correct?

When bait fishing for flatties i usually just rig up a pillie on a 3 gang and bang it out t he side with a decent sinker and this seems to work quite well.

yep. as most of these folk have said just get your lure to the bottom. if you use a Shad style plastic, two quick jerks off the bottom will bring it off the bottom then dart quickly forward, let him swim back down and repeat. flatty can't resist this. if you aren't catching flatty with this technique there aren't any where you're casting

As eveyone is saying, keep your lure close to the bottom.
I like to do a long cast, wait for the lure to hit the bottom then two hard cranks then stop, lift the rod tip a little then shake the rod tip. Stop, let it to bottom agian then repet. This works realy well with s/p's & light jigheads in 1m >2m of water.

Mate, depends on how deep your fishin, and how much run in the tied. I like to start with say 1/8, to 1/4 in water to about 15feet. With a bit more run in the tide ill go up to 5/16 & 3/8. As long as you are getting to the bottom where they are mate.
