On Monday the 23 of June I hit the Caloundra end of the Pumicestone Passage at 5am, little did I know it was a going to be an very interesting and eventful week. Monday morning was slow, fishing tt switchblades amongst the pylons and pontoons in Pelican Waters for only one undersize fish and a few moses perch, then i had a look at a few spots trying to find where the fish are holding. So I decided to Parking the boat on the beach and have some breakfast. After breakfast I took my brother out in search of some bream and flatties on sp’s, it was high tide so I decided to fish and area on accessible at this tide just down from the blue hole. It paid dividends with a fish a cast for over an hour on bream and flatties (as I planned) we landed around 20 fish in this period of 1 and a ½ hrs using 2inch gulp shrimps in banana prawn, 3 inch powerbait minnows in pumpkinseed and 3 inch atomic prong on 1/16 and 1/24 jigheads. I them went back to the unit for some rest. Returning to the dusk session I decided to fish close to the same area but before the water went shallow near a log down from the blue hole (if u see it u’ll know it sort of thing). Again using gulp shrimps, catch bream and flattie after bream and flattie I landed 10 or so in under and hour the best being a 28cm to the fork bream.
Tuesday was a new day so hitting the ramp at 5:30, I decided to fish were I left off Monday, catching a flattie and a 29cm bream(fork) bream and a flattie in 3 casts. This trend continued throughout the morning, catching around 15 – 20 fish in three hours. After breakfast I decided to try the same spot as yesterday were I had that hot session, Tuesday was the complete opposite as I didn’t get one hit . So I decided to try some new ground heading further up the passage, this unfortunately didn’t pay only ending up with three bream on sx40’s in two hours. The dusk session I tried back at the bridge using tt’s. This gave the same result as Monday morning with two small bream and some moses perch.
Wednesday Morning was slow I decided to fish the same area as Tuesday morning but with no results in the first 20 mins I decided to move across the other side of the channel and on the second cast I hooked into a 84cm flattie on 4lb leader

Using gulps shrimp and powerbait minnows I ended up with one flattie, six bream and one whiting. For the midday session I decided to fish the channel that runs through the northern end of bribe island, knowing that it is a gun spot for flathead (although very hard to get boats in and out of unless u know what ur talking bout and seems like an hour to get out of), from the first cast it was double hook-ups on flathead although with the light drags we were using every small flathead felt big, the best thing about fishing this shallow you can see the flattie eat the lure which is a real buzz. After about an hour the water was becoming too shallow for the boat to get back out after about 20 flathead. I used shrimp and prongs to get the flatties. After that we decide to fish the low tide spot on high tide this resulted in no fish. Instead of fishing the evening session I decided to play touch out the front of the unit.
Thursday came round and I decided to fish Thursday as if I was fishing a comp (5 fish, length etc) When I pulled up to fishing the current was very strong and after 20 mins of no touches I decided to move up to just before the green beacon around the blue hole as I though the fish would be sitting around the drop of from ½ a foot of water to 6 foot of water waiting for the bait to swim by. This was successful with my five fish coming in under an hour and a half along with three whiting. The bream were two 32cm, two 30cm and a 24cm (fork) and the best of the whiting being 35cm all we caught on gulp shrimps in banana. Once the current slowed, so did the fishing with only a bream and flattie coming in the next hour and a half. After breakfast I decided to fish a new area only to find that the electric motor wouldn’t work, so ended the week on a sour note as it was such a great weeks fishing.
Total result over one hundred fish caught in really 3 and a half (all being released), the funny thing being most of the bait fisherman really struggled to even get 5 fish a session!!!!
