hi, i have found the sx40's a great lure for catching anything on, as you may of read in the thread "Fishing With Keechie" nuggstar got onto quite a few decent whiting bream and a few small flathead on it. The jackal chubbies are a killer on the bream with a good chance that you will hook a flathead and sometimes whiting. Rebel tiny pop-r's are a great whiting popper on the flats often you get the suprise of a flathead or bream smashing the lure out of the water. For your sinking minnows i would go with a shirashu minnow as i used one of these up the coast and i couldn't beleive how lifelike it looked and also the tiemco minnows are good to. i hope it helps

Halco Scorpion will catch all the fish you mentioned, they are great in water up to 2 meters deep and a lot cheaper than some of the lures mentioned above.
Here is a photo of one. cheers wayne.

hey mate i find the halco scorpions an a brand on lures called prince to be effective when breaming colour hasnt seemed to be a problem of yet. for flathead i use a elcheapo lure from the out back lure brand cant remember the name of the lure its self but its a typical small minnow type lure. but liek most people you will find a lure that suits an an seems to work for you.
good luck

Ecogear's Sx40's are a given...i think they have proven to be the most consistent lure on the market and there variety of colour means there is a lure for almost every scenario imaginable.
I've recently been using VX 40's and i've been having just as much success, if not more, with then then i do with the sx 40's. Particularly on bream!

Hey,
There are several different options with the SX40's
I have 343,308,337 and all work fine i think if your in dirty water the brighter colours are the go but if your in clear water give a more realistic silverish colour a go.

all colours work it just depends on which colour the fish prefer in the system that you fish. i recently went fishing using a immitation mullet sx40 because it looked alot like the mullet swimming around and a mate was using a really gold and orange colour sx40 and the water was quite clear and he nailed alot of different species where as i only had 1 hit on the naturalistic colour.

Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who posted types of lures, I thought i would give a couple a go yesterday( thurs) , It was not real successful i did manage to land a few grinners ( i was told that was what they were by another fisher, little version of a whiting with nasty looking teeth ). Trolled the SX 40 in 1 - 2 mts in the afternoon over weedy type bottom.
Thanks again for the types of lures, now i just need to find where the fish are ;D
Cheers

Hey John,
You are better off casting the sx 40,s at structure for bream, work them off the top of sand flats into deeper water when the tide is up for bream and on top of the flats for whiting, cast or troll for flathead with bright pink or red hb,s such as micro mullet( lively lures) or tilsan bass. Work the edge of weed banks and channels if trolling and I find that getting as shallow as you can ( close to the edge of the sand bar) and going as slow as you can, WITH THE TIDE, is best for flathead. My favourite lure for this is the no longer available Bennett/ McGrath in bright red.
Your lure must be hitting the bottom( the rod tip has to be bouncing from the lure contacting the sand) for best results.
You will soon get sick of removing weed from your lures(rod tip will stop bouncing) if you target areas that are full on weed bed unless you use a lure that stays just above the top of the weed bed( you must know the swimming depth of the lure, eg Manns 5+)and watch your sounder to stay in the correct depth water.
Good luck next trip !!

hooknose,
Thanks for those little tips, i will give them ago next time...... I am struggling to find any yabby flats in the top end of the bay ( north of St Helena) where i have been fishing the last couple of times.
Yep i was getting tired of the weed by then end of it.
In regards to colour of the SX 40 the gold colour was the only one that i could get the other day, and i didn't mind as i used to have good success with gold in the freshwater rivers of FNQ chasing jungle perch, bass and grunters. The water in some of the creeks was stained so the lure blended in with the colour, a bit different to a perfectly clear water of the bay on thursday....
LIVE AND LEARN I GUESS ;D
cheers
John
