From a report I just recieved the dpi and the government has rejected the submissions in the last RIS and gone with the pros, hitting the recreational and shooting a lot of estuary fishers in the foot. Here is part of an email I just got from a high ranking Sunfish member;
"We have received unofficial feedback from the Inshore MAC regarding the changes likely to go thru. In essence, the commercial sector will enjoy a status quo situation, with no species TAC’s, while the rec sector will cop all the new bag and size limits proposed in the RIS. The result is we’ve been slugged yet again, while the commercial sector can go about plundering the resource relentlessly as usual.
They even ignored our suggestions re particular species bag limits and will crucify the estuary rec fishing scene in particular. For example, grunter will have a minimum size of 40cm, with 5 bag limit. Better get out and get a few now, because you won’t be allowed to keep too many you catch in the creeks in future. Fingermark will be 45cm and King threadfin 60cm – so much for the kids catching King in the river.
I don’t know the details of any netting changes, but I’m pretty confident they haven’t been reduced in any way. The N4 offshore 1200m net fishery is going ahead despite everyone’s objections, including GBRMPA and the conservationists. Seems they’ve basically ignored all input that didn’t agree with their prehistoric philosophy.
I’m personally shattered after all the work and time we put in. There won’t be another opportunity to change things for probably 15 years I reckon.
Sunfish’s relevance must be seriously questioned as a result of this debacle. We did our best, but have been treated with distain by the DPI&F and government. I see little point in continuing in our current form".

Hopefully we'll see some outcomes made public soon so we'll be able to formulate our own opinions, rather than jump to conclusions based on the strongly expressed personal opinion of someone else.
Thanks for the heads up though IFISHCQ.

I dont refer to them as the DPI & F, we know them as the FNDPI. The reduction in commercial fishing must happen and fast........not implementing laws to assist them.

G'day!
If changes affect the commercial sector then, by precedence, compensation and/or buy back of licences will be involved at great cost to the government.
It is easier to appease the greenies by affecting the recreational fishers. No compensation required and the possibilities of gain from fines can be pencilled into the governement income.
What makes the real difference: tub after tub of fish caught by the commercial fishers week after week or a half bucket full caught by the average recreational fisherman once every few weeks?

Yeah they are a militant bunch of wannabe rabid greenies the DPI, no skin of their nose the corruption, no responsibility and no care either. it's about the ideology nothing more.
Who can still argue that without a committed voter block behind us we rec-fisherman have even the remotest chance of fair treatment at any level.
Just have to suck it up! for as long as greenies are running the department no chance for fair. considered, reasonable or responsible laws can exist.
cheers fnq

Face it Guys & Gals, we're stuffed. Might as well sell the boat and the fourby, buy a friggin' bicycle and get a real job. Maybe I could be employed in a printing shop doing up posters that say "Welcome to Australia, Comrade".
It is my express intention to break at least one of their stupid crap laws a week, weather permitting. I expect never to get caught, because they are being passed to appease. They will be policed no better than the current ones.
We DO need a strong political presence. What happened to the Fishing Party?

With the suggested alterations to commercial netting I don't see how you could call them greenies. I'm still wondering what a dugong friendly net looks like, perhaps they hang see grass from the corks, so they have a feed before drowning.
If true this is a disappointing result.

What about the rest of you guys?
Maybe we can have a reminder from the mod's as we log on to do something about it.Maybe a list of email address's? Names and Ph #'s?

Well it looks to be right the powers to be have not taken any notice of the ris submissions and as of Monday 21st July there may not be a Capricorn Sunfish anymore..members are asked to attend and vote on the subject.. we could lose possibly the most helpful influence on rec fishing at least in CQ if they do decide to fold..they have done loads for us CQ fishers and we will never get a voice like them again..

So what solutions to this problem are there? Being a small minority party is very very hard as I witnessed last year.
However we have a chance to do something next year at the QLD State Election. So, what do we do?
Run as a fishing based party again?
Join another mob and get our Fishing issues on their agenda?
Join a mainstream party and do the same?
Give up completely, roll over and let them shaft us more?
We have to make some decisions quickly if we are to make an impact with Fishing and Boating. We have hundreds of thousands of boat owners in this state. We have more than that who fish so we have an audience. How do we get them?
Chris
block the gateway (or any other major road way) should take about 1hr to get more attention than we did in the election. If you could keep it up for a week you could name what you want........ cant see it happening.
