gday guys

i just bought my first boat, a quintrex fishnipper 3.5. had an old evinrude 15 on it but i was given a newer jonno 15 not sure what year model, the original owner thought it was 96 but a guy at the marine wreckers said more like 86. anyway. took it for a run this weekend and after sorting out a minor fuel problem, the motor just didnt seem to have the power it used to. wouldnt push the boat up on the plane and when i was in it by myself it would just start to get up and then rev out as if it dropped out of gear, also done this when turning a corner.
with someone i n the front it only done this when turning. just didnt get on theplane very slow.

my original thoughts were that the shaft may have been too short but its plenty inthe water and is only 50-60mm shorter than the motor the boat came with.

it was suggessted to me that it could be loose bushes in the prop??
anyone have any idea what might be the problem??

Check the plate directly above the prop and measure how close to the bottom of the hull it is, light tinnys need to be fairly close to level, if yours is say an inch above (or more) you will be sucking too much air, if it is level or below look very hard at the prop bush you mentioned.

Angler,

A picture is worth a thousand words)or so they say) how about a pic of the engine height showing us the bottom of the hull lined up with the propellor (side veiw)

cheers for that mate
ill put it back on and check it out.
i put the evinrude back on today and gave it a run. went sweet as until on the way back to the boat ramp it just died. was a bit smokey but looked to me more like steam. had to row for an hour to get to the ramp. got it started halfway back but the water shooting out of the engine. so that may have been the problem. got it home and it was a little hard to start but started and water was flowing with the muffs on.
i was warned not to trust the motor when i bought the boat so i only have myself to blame! so now i have a boat and 2 dud motors! hahaha

Where was the water coming out?

Dont call it quits until the fat lady sings. Both motors may just need a little TLC and set up correctly.

As spaniard king has said pics are worth a thousand words.

yeah that water shooting out the port at the back end of the motor (assuming its squirting downward) is normal and you WANT to see that all the time! Thats what is called the "telltale" and shows that cooling water is indeed being pumped through the system.

Sometimes if you get the engine overrevving like the prop has no load on it, this is because the prop has come out of the water or broken the water surface and loses its "grip" on the water so to speak. This happens moreso during turns than straight running, so as others say, check your engine height. The horizontal plate just above the propeller should be roughly level with the lowest point on the back of the boat. Perhaps even an inch lower is ok, but not too low or you have excessive drag when underway.

I have an '86 Johnson 15hp that I have been having problems with... Have done a bit of work on it so have gained a fair bit of knowledge on that particular model engine. What is the model number for the engine? There should be a plate on the side of the motor under the head somewhere with a serial/engine model number. If you tell us that we can tell you what year motor it is.

yeah the telltale, is where it wasnt coming from after it died the first time

yeah trouble with that mate is that this motor has been painted over once or twice. ive looked all over for a plate just to tell me what it is but cant find it. the guy at the marine wreckers said it was a jonno. there is a plate there but nothing on it ill try to rub the paint back see if there is anything under it.

nope no model number on the jonno
but the telltale probs were on the evinrude anyway

the model number is E15RLCIS
it is pretty old

E15RLCIS = 1981 model.

Back in those days basically Evinrude and Johnson motors were very similar/identical under the bonnet for smaller engines... i.e. my 86 15hp Johnson is the same as an 86 15hp Evinrude :)

And yeah if only steam is coming from the telltale, you need a new water impeller as its not pumping enough water and the motor is overheating turning that small amount of water it is getting into steam.

cheers mate

although the steam wasnt coming out of the telltale. coming out of the engine cover but when i opened it it dispersed pretty quickly so wasnt sure where from

is it much to replace the impeler??
worth getting fixed?
was thinking of getting rid of that motor anyway. but would probably be better to sell working than for parts

Relacing the impeller is a regular yearly maintenance item that is often done when servicing your outboard at a service centre or repair shop etc, so they are an item that needs to be changed as it wears out and becomes ineffective. The impeller kits you can buy go for about $50 or you could just buy the rubber impeller probably for $15-20.

Steam coming from under the engine cover hmm... could be a gasket leak somewhere in the cooling passages maybe? Was steam and not smoke yeah?

Might be worth doing a compression check of the motor as well just to see all is ok with cylinder chamber gaskets and rings too.

hey guys
sorry i havent posted pics yet, been busy. but i don tthink its really necessary now anyway. I put the Jonno on the boat and it is definitley way too short! so thats one prob solved.
the old evinrude i took in to get fixed. the guy thinks it was the impeler also. so hopefully that is the only problem as im not really willing to spend too much more money on the motor!
Picking th emotor up tomorrow so hopefully ill get a flick in on the weekend :)

cool hope it all works out. Had my johnno out in the flush tub today for its regular weekly startup. I had a few litres of fresh gas and took the opportunity to get back onto the Valvoline Synthetic fortified oil. Prior to that I ran a tank through of BP Hi-Tide oil which I had to use one public holiday when I had run out of Valvoline and was the only bottle of oil I could find at the servo's.

The BP stuff is quite smokey and left lots of crap floating in the flush tub, and lots of unburnt oil leaking out the prop for a week later. Spark plugs didnt look too crash hot either. Switched back to Valvoline today (new petrol - I didn't mix oils in the tank etc) and she smokes less and no noticeable unburnt oil leakage yet. Despite what many say, the old Valvoline outboard oil works well for my motor :)

Hi guys,

Got a question about the same motor, Johnson 15 Model # J15RSSM.

On the way back to the ramp last trip it sounded a bit rough, so was glad to be home. I just ran it now on the muffs and it's sounding ok, but may be different story in the water.

The question is that there was a little water coming out the the "drain hole" that is at the back of the motor on the bottom of the motor housing where it joins the midsection. When it reved up there was a bit of exhaust as well as a fair dribble of water.

Because I've only had this one for a few trips I have not noticed this before and don't know if this is normal or a sign of a leak in the motor somewhere.

Will investigate in the morning light before taking it out.

Any ideas welcome.
