Well done. Would love to go for a fish out through the surf one day. Might have to get a single yak though, or another deckie. Don't think SWMBO is too keen on doing the surf launch.

Mate, that would have been awesome sport especially on a yak :)

What bait did you catch them on or were you using lures?

Cheers Tom

Do you weight your livies and send them to the bottom or just let them swim around unweighted or troll them unweighted?
I have often wondered what was the best live bait method.

the livies are trolled deep on a downrigger.say fishing in 20metres i like to troll them at 15metres deep

Oh Crap! Does that mean I still need more gear on my Kayak!? I'm gonna sink it soon.

You don't carry a live bait tank do you couta?! What do you do when you run out of bait? Go back to the bait grounds and catch more.
Do you consider that having the downrigger is a main factor with your success of catching more fish?

Thanks Couta

There are some amazing Kayak fishing clips on YouTube. Marlin, big Sharks, Pelagics of all sorts, you name it and someone has caught it on a Kayak! Great stuff!.

Well done couta1, that would have been a lot a fun!.

Cheers

awesome catch you have there couta, i'm going to give the jew a crack at the mouth of the brissy river in my yak sat 28th... just one would be good let alone 3 like you managed, you certainly have them sussed. i tried last weekend for a jew but my pike only mustered up a wobbygong like 2-3 metres long that pulled one of my knots just as i was about to tail it.
cheers brendan

the downrigger method i use is simple and effective!..it involves attaching a 4.oz to 6.oz teardrop lead on the line(the ones with the swivel from BCF) about 6 metres up from the bait.use an elastic band to atach it to the line..simple and less gear.when you get the fish and you are winding up and the sinker appears just pull the elastic band and snap it of...and its all free.

i like to troll with one down rigger and one on the surface as to try and cover the complete water colum and more options.the kayak i have has a dry hatch which i convert to a live bait tank with an airator.or use one of the collapsable live bait buckets available.

i normally catch about 6 livies and that lasts me.if 6 livies get me 6 fish then thats enough.i normally try to keep only 2 or 3 good fish for me and the misses for a feed

Oh, so not a proper downrigger then, a do it yourself job. Nice.

Next time I bump into you down the coast I'll have to have a look exactly how to do that if you don't mind.

I'm forever looking at ways to simplify and streamline things.

I need all the help I can get because I suck at fishing at the moment! Maybe it's my aftershave. (or lack of)
