Picked up an old 1974 Pongrass 1/2 cabin 2 weeks ago that had a rotted out floor. Easy to replace but some of the stringers had rot, have cut that out and am ready to replace....all the fibreglass books i have say to use the same wood to replace but have no idea what wood is usually used in stringers....looks like hardwood to me but would like to be sure.
Also need the motor looked at its a 1969 Lark evirude 40HP anyone know a good (reasonably priced) marine mechanic i can call?? Lookin at replacing it but will need a 2nd mortgage on the house to be able to afford a new motor wow are they over priced or what????:-/

Hi Killerkiwi
mate the best thing to replace your ribs is with Marine 8ply and then coat them in Fiberglass 2-3 coats for strength the same as the floor only in 3ply make sure you do the underbelly of ply with Fibreglass before placing it on the ribs make sure you place the ribs in then cut them down so as the floor will be even this will give you strength in your floor last coat of glass i mixed the gel coating in risen then rolled it on floor give you good strength.
as far as a good Marine mechanic goes rind Mark and Shane at Southside marine outboard wreckers an mechanical services at Bethania on
(07)38058595 great guy's and reasonably priced but do a great job on repairing motor i will not go anywhere else with my motor they can also sauce you a good second hand motor if required
Cheers
Steve

first up are we talking "stringers" that run the lenth of the boat or are we talking under floor "bulkheads" that run between the chines, across the boat.
Will also add that resin does not soak into ply like we always thought, do the tests, I have. Back later- gota go and earn some dollars.
cheers
