I was looking at the 5mm,1500 kg,and 7mm,3000kg,winch ropes ( Dyneema,or Spectra) and decided I would purchase some of the same rope from the reel.

The stuff on the reel,in 5mm has a breaking strain of only 950kgm.
An 8 mm size, has a breaking strain of 2950 kg.

The winch ropes, made up ,state they are from high modulus polyethylene rope, yet the name seems to be the same.
I did a search, and found that Dyneema/Spectra, on the reel, has a HMPE core, with a polyester filament cover, and that would account for the lower breaking strain.
So what is the stuff used in winch ropes, with the bigger breaking strain.

Anyone got any better links, that I can take a look at,and where can you buy the stronger stuff?

If you go to b!as boating, check out the drums of spectra that they have on the shelf. Those won't be acceptable and you have probably already seen similar.

But, look on the side of the drum, and there is a sticker with the manufacturers name and phone number in Melbourne... They are a rope and cordage specialist - give them a call.

cheers

Mick, great idea.Gees you have to be careful. You would think the name Dyneema, would be the answer, but its different stuff.
Thanks for the idea.
In their catalogue, they cal the winch material Dyneema, and qualify it as the High Modulus Polyethylene.
Imagine some poor buggar buying the stuff from the reel, expecting because it is the correct size, that the breaking strain was the same
