I tried to start my 25 2 cyl Mercury engine over easter and it wouldn't start...
It had been sitting a couple of months before that with no use but used to start easily.
I tried changing the plugs and it's getting fuel to the carby but it doesn't kick over at all....

Any idea's ?

G'day

Switch box....... on the left hand side of the engine, all wires going into it.

Would be worth getting the mechanic to check it

hhmm sounds to me like a kill switch type of thing as well, pretty easy to do a quick spark check, remove the plugs, reconnect one to the plug lead and hold the body of the plug on a clean spot on the Motor and give the Cord a pull, should see a nice Blue Spark if not, then you need to trouble shoot the Ignition system/kill switch, also make sure you do not have Petrol spilled/leaked when doing the Spark test, when you remove the plugs, see if they are all wet or dry and get back to us

I just remembered something, there was a very common issue with the model that had the stop button on the end of the Tiller handle, they used to jam and stay off

Ok Noel... I'll take Dave's advise and take it into the mechanic.
Just rang and they said to bring it right in......I don't have much to do with marine mechanics since I got the E-Tec a couple of years ago so I think I'll hang around the workshop and watch what he does to the motor.

OK, no probs, let us know what it is, might just save someone else a trip to the "Doctors" one day.

Turned out to be the "trigger".
Pretty insignificant looking part but that's what the problem was.
Took the mechanic about 5 minutes to figure it out...
Powerpack and stator had been replaced about 12 months ago by previous owner....so electrical components are all practically new except for the coil....
Not much else to go wrong with it hopefully.
Might take the kids and chase up a crab or 2 on the weekend.

Quite unusual there Scott. Triggers very rarely give trouble. In fact i have never changed a Merc trigger. They are such low current coils that they just don't fail.

But of course it appears to have. What was the repair cost? and what year engine?

Cheers
