looking at buying a 40 hp two stroke tiller. Always liked mercury but had one priced and came in about $1200 dollars dearer than the suzuki. The mercury is a 3 cylinder and the suzi has only 2. Does this make a big differance on performance or fuel consumption and is it really worth an extra $1200 for another cylinder. (mercury does not make 2 cylinder model anymore) Any advice would be much apreciated.

I think i have the Mercury engine your looking at getting and so far to date I LOVE IT.
I have the 40hp 2st 3cyl Lightning.
Fuel consumption after 10 hours use... 25L gets me 60km's at top speed of 24kts (so far... i reckon i'll get 26kts when it's run in). thas 2.5km/L. I have a 4.6m centre console.
Mine is electric start, but she starts first go every time.

Mate you can still get the 2cyl merc 40hp but like always it's still built by Tohatsu & the Toey's are tough, strong & reliable engine. The 40hp from Tohatsu can be tuned up to a 50hp with ease with a prop change & new jet in the carbies. But if your looking to spend extra $1200 i would get 3cyl 40hp Yamaha 2 stroke, quick quiet & good on fuel.. & had a price for one last year @ $4200

I don't own a Suzuki 2 stroke and this is only hearsay and "I know a bloke" thing, but I have heard that the Suzuki 2 stroke does not enjoy the reputation and following that the 4 stroke has, it could be just a "throw back" to the bad old days when Suzies had a fairly dodgey reputation, but I have never really heard from someone who owns a 2 stroke Suzuki that has said it was a dud, and (just my thoughts) if I could get a 3 cylider 40 over a 2 cylinder 40 I would take the 3 every time, regardless of brand, there is a couple of reasons why, mostly more power strokes per revolution makes for a smoother Motor plus a few other odds and ends, but I would reckon they would both be good.

Hi
This is just my thoughts, I would think that the Mercury 40 would be the way to go because it's a 3 cylinder, and would probably last longer, because it's not having a work so hard as opposed to the 2 cyinder Suzuki.
Cheers

thanks for your thoughts guys, after reading these i think i'll go with my first choice the mercury. I guess if the differance is having something you like rather than trying to take the cheaper way out is only $1200 than its not to bad. Atleast its for a good cause

Use to own a evinrude and now own a suzie 07 model
have done close to 50hours on it and still going like a dream.
I have seen to many mercury and mariners getting towed in and a few of my mates recon there nothing special.
It pushes my 4.2m decked out stacer fine so im happy with mine.

I'm sure in this day and age with all the technology around there is no such thing as a bad outboard but i think its a matter of some are better than others.

Ive seen plenty of "old" outboards on boats being towed.. Of course you'll see a 25 yr old merc being pulled in but they will basically go for ever if looked after. I dont see many older "throw away" suzuki engines on boats :D
it always brings a smile to my lips when i read this whole 'Merc' v 'Suzi'v "yammi' etc etc etc. I think the truth is it's all down to personal opinion/preference. in this day & age with the technology most are pretty much the same in performance & reliability. we still hear the black anchor thing from many years ago & what a load og garbage Chryslers were.. IMHO Chryslers were a damn good motor, designed for ude in fresh water but we were never told that so they had a lot of problems caused by salt. if you ever saw one that was looked after you would see that they were not crap. probably the same for early Mercs, maybe they were mainly freshwater use as well.
if all things were based on the earlier motors you would not go within a 100 mtrs of a Suzuki, but try & tell that to someone with a late model.
i have a 3cyl 40hp Merc 2001 model, can't fault it..
i think you will find lemons in all brands, just have to convince those with closed minds..:-/

Go for the suzi with the savings buy yourself accessories such a sounder. Mine pushes my 4.2 stacer with me in it and I'm no twiggy along very nicely. ;D
Cheers
R3volt is on the money. I think they are all good these days, but the reason you see old Merc's and Jonno's being towed in, is shear neglect and maybe a bit of bad luck. Plus the fact that there are MILLION'S of them around. I had a "looked after" 4 cyl Blueband which was a beautiful and powerful motor. Keep the fuel fresh, carbs clean, and regular Lync an Sync etc and and old Merc will outlive YOU.
What's this "Go the mighty blues".. Didn't the Lions thrash them by 5 goals ?::)
