Had today off work so made a late decision last night to go for a fish today. Left home at the lazy-mans hour of 6:10am, and battled my way through the traffic to get to Whyte Island ramp about 7:00am.

Heading out the river mouth and came across about five big schools of mac tuna boiling up. Thought why not and stopped and had a few casts, but no hits. Not wanting to waste anymore time, I quickly gave up on the tuna and headed for Mud.

The first two hours or so was very slow with not much happening and tried a few different spots. Finally came across a school of Squire and boated three in five minutes, but unfortunatly all undersize (20, 30,25 cms) Missed two other bigger hits. Things went quiet again after that apart from a small Grassy Sweetlip (approx 20cm) which was my first ever grassy but nothing to be cheering about.

Moved spots and first cast got a small saddletail sea pearch (I think) Then met up with Brad [For Steve] and had a chat before we got back into the fishing. We dirfted the same area for a few hours.

Soon after I got a 34cm Grassy and another one at 25cm. That was right on low tide and things quietened down for a while.

About an hour or two later, bang i'm on to something with a bit of size which took a few small runs. At that point i'm thinking.. Oh yeh pb snapper! A minute or so later I had the fish in the boat. wasn't the snapper I was after, but a 50cm Estuary Cod, which is a PB cod for me so I was very happy. It gave a good account of itself. Fished for another hour or so, with a few hits but no hook ups.

Pulled the pin and headed home. Was a great day to be on the water today as the bay was glassed out most of the day and nice sunny weather. A few fish made it a bonus.

The cod was caught on a 5" nuc chook, and all the others were got on 4" minnow lime tigers and 5" blue pepper neons.

Thanks again Brad for all the tips and hopefully we can get out again next friday.

Thanks guys.

Capt it was on the west side. It was very nice to be there without a crowd. About 4pm when I pulled the pin there was lots of boats turning up, and I saw about another 6 or so boats heading for the whyte island ramp as i was leaving. im sure there would have been a crowd out there last night.

Thanks Silent, a bullseye hey? Do ya eat them and if so, whats legal size?

Congratulations on the PB mate. Very nice fish - I bet they'll be tasty. We're having a few people over for dinner tonight. Don't you just love going to the fish and chip shop and only ordering chips.

A school of mac tuna popped up not long after you left. I chased them around for a few minutes but no hits.

Til next week,
Brad
