View Full Version : What should I do

I fish the Passage most weekends in my small tinny. While anchored fishing away I get passed by more than 50 boats traveling within 30m and doing anywhere from 10 to 30knots throwing up a huge wash for my 3.4m boat. This is very dangerous for me in a small vessel. I note at the boat ramp a sign stating a 6 knot speed limit for where I fish a lot of the time, but 99% of boaties seem to ignore it.
I thought the rules state that when passing a vessel within 30meters whilst it is anchored, you must do 6 knots no wash. What should a bloke do to stop or reduce this madness.

I post this as I reflect on the past weekend where at least 4 of these idiots passed within arms length of me at anchor, doing at least 10-15 knots and almost swamping me.>:( :o

WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

i hear you man i got this in cabbage tree creek or well i should say nunday creek, we were anchored off to the side of the creek probably about 10 meters to the bank and boats were flying around and nearly knocking us out the only time they slowed was when i was netting a nice bream about 28cm fork length. it gets quite anoying there is a pitty there is not much to do that i know of.

I do anchor on the side of the channel, but where I do this the speed limit is still 6 knots. And even if I do anchor in the channel anywhere and you pass within 30 meters the limit as I belive is still 6 knots. So I assume you would like 1 serve of fish guts this weekend or would you prefer 2 serves.;D

Take a camera along that can attach a date watermark to the image and take some snaps of offenders coming too close. If you get pissed enough with them forward the entire lot to MSQ and they will have a blitz on it in the coming weeks or months. Sometimes authorities need some direction in what to focus on at the moment.

take rego numbers and report them to water police, if enough complaints are made, one day you will see them out there with the hair dryer, handing out speeding tickets. And yes, the water police still have speed guns and can still book you for speeding on the water, go fast enough and you can lose all licenses you hold, boat, car, bike, truck etc

just seems to me your in a fairly busy little area. dont think theres a heap that you can do apart from giving them the bird. however anchoring in the channel is a different story, probably a more serious concern obstructing vessels than speed limits themselves.. anyway thats a totally different kettle of fish. hope they dont disturb you too much this weekend and you get a few.

cheers

Thanks for the support all. I know we aint all little angles, me included, so I don't want to be a kill joy and have everyone nabed by the fun police. But of the ones I see that do the wrong thing some 25%ish fall into the idiotic dangerous catogorey and IMO need a wake up call.

I may just have to invite the water police on board one weekend to observe how bad the situation realy is. They may just then set up and nab 99% of our local water useers.

noboat,

i think we are on the same wavelength when it comes to not going by the rules of the sea/road or whatever. i do most of my boating on the dam,and the rule that says you must navigate the water way on the starboard side has gone out the window. especially when there are a bunch of ski boats around jossling for areas to open her up etc. you must pass an on coming boat to your ports side. this is non existant. i am asking the same question...what should i do? how is it that these people can get a license, and not abide by the rules?

I normally try to slow for small tinnies anchored in narrow channels. Sometimes it is a little difficult to judge all the signs and I probably can be told I am going too fast if I don't have time to react. Sometimes the judgement is that the planing wake will hurt you less than dropping to six knotts and letting you get hit by the stern wave caused as the stern lowers off the plane. If it is a signed 6 knott area, then that is what I will be doing.

I don't know whether this is any help to you, but I'd give weekends away, and try for weekdays if you can. I have to be really desperate to fish weekends now. It's so much nicer being on the water through the weekends an easier on the ramps too.

Cheers

They should be sticking to the 6 speed limit.
it is a shame to put up with that.

good luck sorting it out.

it's kinda' a tough one isn't it? i try to give everyone a wide berth if i'm moving but sometimes it's not easy. for example heading out the front at beachmere there is a pretty narrow channel somewhere between the leads, i have to be on the plane through the leads on the bottom bit of the tide because if you cross over the side of the channel it's damn shallow. people anchor in the channel to fish and sometimes i've just gotta steam on past so i don't hit the bottom. obviously common sense prevails and there's no way i would endanger anyone, so if i had to, i'd get off the plane and feel my way through.

This is not directed at you noboat, but some people make me wonder where they anchor..I've come out from Spinaker and people are basically anchoring in channel markers for going under the bridge. Surely people can give this area a wider berth?

report them mate... I am sure I speak for the majority none of us want to become a statistic like recent events on the water..we all enjoy our boating be it fishing or liesure but we all need to do it safe and consider other peoples safety as well as our own...

Yeah people fish in the middle of a channel and you got to wonder why, but you got to go around them so I slow down if I have to but , or I try to give a wide bearth as my my stern wash is definatly worse then my plane wash , especially when she drops back in the hole . But the tourist boats dont , they will pass by pretty close no matter where you anchor and their wash is down right deadly to a small anchored boat .
And Your right Johnny Roger , the ski boats are horrendous on Tinaroo so I don't go up there much , I rather stay alive and last time I was up there I was pretty sure some one was going to get hurt , too many boats all wanting the same bit of water . We were towing the mates kids on tubes and fishing at night , and I still have never caught a barra at Tinaroo , but I got five rats in the inlet last night so I think I'll stay down here and fish the night time when there are less people on the warpath .
