Stayed at the beatiful Iluka for the long w/e and we found it abit hard fishing. First night we got there was saturday night and we were fishing the rock wall with livies and got nothen. Saturday morning we fished with ganged pillies and couldnt raise a scale. we saw a guy catching dart after dart in the 1st gutter right byside the wall. My dad said dont worry with dart like that being caught there will be some tailor there tonite.
We fished later that night and got smashed by something after a good fight i got it close to the wall and in the dark with no net or gaff, and with the waves bashing against the rocks i managed to get her up. Yay joy at last with a 54cm tailor :D . My dad follwed it up with a 40cm specimen and by then the wind got up and we ran out of bait so we left.
For the rest of the w/e we didnt really catch that much other then some dart. We did see one guy carying a big jewie over his shoulder at the wall and a guy who spun up some tailor at the bluff but othr then that it was abit quiet. We still had some fun and had a enjoyable w/e so that was ok.

Top tailor mate. I havent fished for tailor yet this season. Did one session at iluka and got a few while fishing for bream. I've seen a few fish starting to poke around over here at yamba.

Hey guys,
I was at Iluka all long weekend as well, sorta a bday present from my p's. We towed the boat down as every other year we have just fihsed the walls. Was reasonably quiet, tried browns rocks, collis wall, middle wall etc. got most of our catch at the good old iluka walls. I hooked up to something BIG in the gap between the right wall and second wall. Fought it for a while, with several runs once i got it close to the boat (this was on my floater pilly rig) and just as i got it near the boat it went for one last run and rocked me grrrrrrr. From what im told by dizzy's and other locals it was a big Jew :-[ . Annoys me losing big fish, I dobn't often get a chance at them.
When we went down to the cleaning station to clean our bream I notcied this old fella with a huge haul (28kg cobia 2x 10kg bluefin tunas and various other reefies) look around the carpark and all I can see is a 13 foot tinny behind a 4x4. So i asked him how the hell did he manage 2 catch what he did in that boat ---> woody head boat ramp. Man didn't even know it existed, boat ramp straight into the water, no bar to cross and your instantly offshore, magic. So anyway, needless to say the next morning we launched at 6am or so headed to top knob reef. Man the show on the sounder was fantastic, schools of fish at the tops of shelves etc. Anyway we weren't really set up for deep stuff and didnt have heavy enough sinkers (paternoster with a pilly would have been perfect) keep in mind we have never been offshore, we only own a 4.75m Bluefin. First cast my dad hooks up 2 a nice Mack tuna, 5kg, 75 cm, quite a fight. As I had nothing to focus on while he was pulling in the swell got 2 me and it was chuck time. I really wanted 2 stay but just kept feeling sick >:(. So we made our way back, its realllly not fun retrieving the boat at high tide there though.
Im already planning the next trip to Iluka for june-july. Me and a couple of mates from work will fish the reefs all week. I dont see the point in staying at the camping ground when Iluka is so close and u got the pub and accomo is so cheap. Stayed at the beachouse btw. Ive heard the woody head boat ramp can be washed out sometimes. Anyone know if this is common?
Cheers, Scott
