something around 54lb is ideal ..... Match it with a 120AMP deep cycle battery!
the best battery choice in a wet cell would be a Trojan ( spend the $100 more & get quality)
This set up ..... wont have you running flat out all day on the throttle ....... leaving you with good charge in the battery ( which will prolong the life)

I have a 54lb on my 395 Ally Craft and it is more then adequate. I have done my last 3 trips on one charge of a 105amp Trojan and it is only just staring to indicate a slight drop in voltage.

there was a 54lbs Jarvis for sale on Ausfish a few weeks ago, think it was around $400. But like Nagg said, spend good money on a battery

So how far could you expect an electric motor to take you? I mean assuming you have say a 40lb leccie on a 3.5-4m boat with normal fishing loads and 2 people on board and say a 100amp deep cycle battery. Could it take you, say, 15km? Reason I ask is that I was thinking of putting one on my boat and would probably hit the buzzer if it could potentially act as a backup auxiliary motor to get me back to a ramp if the main combustion motor failed...
For where I fish, a ramp is always within 15km of any current location. I usually fish rivers and smooth waters, not bay etc. Will an electric go that kind of distance on a 100amp battery (dont want to carry any battery too large). I know it will be slow going of course, but that isnt a concern.

Keechie,
I would be opting for a MK RT55AP bowmount for your tinny. Will give you ample thrust for those tricky situations where winds and currents are working against you. You will find a quite a lot of these periods when fishing the creeks and rivers close to structure. 120AH DC battery will suit you nicely. You might get a shock at the price of a decent charger for the deep cycles tho, I did at $280 for a charger that will fill a 120ah overnight easily. Turbo Batteries produce a good battery that has decent longevity, my two are 5 years old now and still taking and holding a charge like they did new. Turbo batteries are at Brendale.
BaitThrower,
Your question about distance for a lecky on your boat is entirely openended. It will come directly down to how fast you wish to travel at and conditions and the weight and resistance to being moved through the water. That being said tho, my MK RT55AP will give me near on 16 hours use from a 120AH DC battery running at about 1/4 throttle for 90% of the time. If I crank up to flat out i would probably get 3 or 4 hours out of it at most.
Travelling "slow" with a lecky is nothing like travelling slow with an outboard. You can travel at an inches / minute with a lecky without a problem, so I suspect you will want maybe 5 knots speed or so for your "slow" and that would be nigh on flat out.

Hello Ausmembers
I'm also looking for a leecy, but my boat is a 4.3m and usually always traveling with 4 people. How much Lb of thrust would i be looking for?
Also what the ratio between how many lb of thrust/ per metre boat? As in what kind of leecy would i be looking for if it vary from smaller to a larger boat?
Thanks Tri

Thanks for reply. yeah I know there are lots of variables etc. Just was after a ballpark answer of whether its possible or not. Judging by your answer, it sounds like it may be, but would be a long journey time-wise back :)
