View Full Version : Scum at the boat ramp
Headed out to mud about 2.30 sunday afternoon for a long awaited fish. Took the missus out and managed 2 legal squire from about 10 caught. Both 38cm. Also caught 2 shovelnose sharks. One was about 3 and a half feet, put up an awesome fight as I hooked him in his side flap.
Headed home about 8 pm to redcliffe boat ramp where upon arrival, waited a good 5 minutes for THREE men to put their boat on the trailer, then while I was cleaning my 2 squire they approached the cleaning table. Their tally, 6 undersize moses perch, two undersize bream, and to my disgust, three very undersize squire. All fish were so small, very obviously under their respective limits. Where is fisheries when you need them, and why do people get so angry when you point out that they are knob heads and are destroying the bay for all.
What can we do about things like this?????

Save 1800 017 116 into your mobile, (Qld) Fisheries Hotline.
http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/dpi/hs.xsl/28_147_ENA_HTML.htm
Take note of the boat rego number also for them and leave it to Fisheries. The honest mistake is obvious, the blatant "mistake" even more so. You can talk and advise the first, the 2nd group have intent and aren't interested.
Fisheries were pretty active on the bay yesterday from what I saw, but they can't cover every ramp 24 by 7.
Cheers
Dave
I came back into cabbage tree creek one nite, at the cleaning table there were 2 guys cleaning fish.....i put the boat on...and as i was folding the canopy down and so forth one asked if id done any good.....i said 2 keepers (snapper)...."oh we got a heap"...so i went over for a look.....there would have been about 30 squire all under 20cm At the MOST........the comment was "you dont get much of a fillet ofem but".........i pointed out that they were undersize....was told "who gives a F**K"......

Don't feel too bad for those particular fish, the government happily sanctions and can justify far far more destructive practices from the fish's eye view Australia wide.
Consider it like this - you have been adhering to the law for the last 500km of your road trip and a bloke overtakes you doing 20% above the signed limit - what gives him that right!!
cheers fnq
For anyone interested the N.S.W fishers watchline is 1800 043 536.

Well what do you know!. Went for as run in the boat over to Peel this afternoon, as I had not been out in it for about 10 days, so wanted to clear a few cob webs.
Took a couple of rods and some SPs and ended up drifting the trench up the western side for a little while. Had a few enquiries but nothing stuck. A Fisheries boat (5 metre tinny) came along to said hello. Had to apologise for not having anything to show them.
Have been fishing the bay for 10 years and that is the first time I have been inspected, though I see them out and about a fair bit. We were over lounging around in Horseshoe on a friend's boat yesterday and they were working the area hard in the afternoon. As were the Maritime Safety guys. Good to see the high visibility and they seem to have put in extra effort over the last few long weekends.
Cheers

Disappointing to see that a small minority wish to take undersized fish. Probably the same people that push in at the boat ramp!!

Or dont you hate it when someone tries to tell you off for catching undersize fish, when you are actually catching baitfish like hardy heads and herring in the nets off Redcliffe jetty? lol happened a while back, we had a half a bucket of hardies and herring and an old fella threatened to call fisheries because "every single one of my fish were undersize" just didnt give up and kept going on and on ffs.

it happens everywhere people taking undersize fish, no licence, unregistered, WE NEED MORE FISHERIES OFFICERS.... to put it simple the fisheries should be like the milkman, posty, someone to talk to and not someone to be scared of... UNLESS YOUR ONE OF THE TOOLS....? Cheers bdowdy..brett

It makes you mad thinking you just released a fish so that it can reproduce and then the guy in the boat next to you catches it again and throws its strait on ice and just doesnt care. Maybe we could put foward some sort of petition to dpi&f, if they want more green zones they have to put foward alot more officers aswell.
Something along those lines anyway

Not 15 years ago buddy :) and it wasnt a cast net, it was a home made drop net, lower it down, throw wet bread on top of the water, hardies swim over the top, then lift net up. Pure genius it was.
