Live baiting the seaway

Gday guys im planning on livebaiting in the seaway over the weekend, so I was wondering does anyone know where to get some decent livies around the area im so sick of catching them in brisbane and keeping them alive on the drive the saltwater goes everywhere on the trip!

I catch plenty of live bait such as mullet, herring up in the Nerang canals, but if you dont wanna head that far up, ive caught Hardy Heads only about 10cm long around the Pin area, dont really know of many spots really close to the seaway, maybe you could try opposite the seaway on the other side of the broadwater (Land side), there is an entrance to the Runaway Bay, Biggera Waters area(There is a Marina to your right as you enter), just go in there and maybe give that a go? only about 100m from entrance. (Never tried there but have fished in the area and i think there would be mullet and herring in there) Maybe you could also try a bait jig while your fishing in the Seaway, you never know they could be down there.

Last thing: Id say this would probably recieve more hits if it was in the "Saltwater" section (there is a way to move it there, not sure how though)

Simon, you can get good livies from the shipwreck just outside and south , it's called the Scottish Princess.

the beakon on the north side of wave break, jig or net for herrings. Also around the sundale bridge pillers.

Best bet for me is get them up in the canals of the nerang somewhere. Fair bit of bait in there and you dont have to travell toooo far with them. not too much of a hassle.

If your after jew or kingy, then you want slimy macks or yakkas or tailor.

The bridge pylons at sundale only produce herring which are too small for teh seaway. Dont bother with bridges unless you are going to fish upriver with herring for jacks in summer.

The nth point of Wavebreak has mullet, but its hard to castnet in 20ft of water with current. You can be lucky and get em clost to the Nth rockwall of Wavebreak.

Id go slimies from the scottish princess by jigging, thats fairly easy. Get a bucketful in 10-15 mins.

The slimies arent as active a bait as the yakkas, youll need gps marks for the GC baitgrounds which are no further than the scot prince, but more East.

Best way to get tailor is lure or bait 50-10m off the nth wall point- just watch the tides, drift, and superbank - big surprise waves can happen, but they are rare unless you drift into the surfbreak on nth straddie. Spinning silver lures, or just floatlining a whole pilly works.

Its hard to crack livies between the boatramps and the seaway, I have the same problem myself. I prefer mullet and get em way upstream in the Coomera, but thats still hit and miss. Sometimes I can castnet for an hour, and then put the boat back on the trailer and drive to the seaway. Its quicker to motor to the scottish prince if conditions are ok for small boats.

Maybe someone else has cracked it better and will share with us?

Hi Simon, I watched a local charter operater castnetting off the southern rock wall of wave break on the incoming tide. He was throwing the cast net right next to the rocks and getting quite a few. - cheers Richard
