After the disappointment of the last trip to a little ledge I fish in the Redcliffe shallows, I had been itching to get back out there for another go. Organised an FDO(fishing day off) and hit the water at first light this morning. Preety quiet for the first hour or so, but once the tide started to move water over my ledge the action picked up. Landed a couple of keepers at 40 and 47cms and then hooked a stonker that buried me faster than you can blink. A few more landed around the 40-50cm mark, which were released. About 8.30am I got one at 63cms(BBQ size), added him to the keeper net and cast back out again, only to get slammed on the drop. Line was disappearing fast, but the fish headed for open water so I thought I may have a chance. About 10minutes went by before I saw my prize and after a couple of anxious moments the fish was netted and I was gobsmacked. I picked it for about 85-90cms. This fish had fallen to a 4" swimming mullet in pumkinseed with 8lb braid and 6lb leader. I had no intention of keeping such a great fish, but it was going to be difficult to get photo's on the yak, and crap, no bragmat. I have a tape measure in the car, that will do. So i put the fish in the keeper net, tied a rope to it and towed it back to shore (about 400metres). The fish was photographed quickly and released beside the ramp, soaking me with one beat of its tail when it realised it was free. The only disappointment is the photos. Sorry the quality is pathetic. The lcd screen is stuffed and I did not know there was water on the lense until I got home. Bugger. For the record the fish went 94-96cms. It was hard to keep it still to get an accurate measurement with water washing up the ramp constantly. One of the photos shows the 63cm fish flopping around in a bid for freedom.

nice fish foggy. gotta be happy with that from a yak. would have been a pretty tough battle on the light gear. well done.

G'day foggy.
Bloody awesome - that would've got your blood pumping. Catching a fish nearly a metre long on 6lb leader only 400m from shore. How does it get better than that?
Great report,
Brad

Thats a great way to set a new PB. Hopefully there will be a couple still floating around the Bay later in the weekend
Our Bay fish must come from NZ as they don't have head bumps there either
What plac did the damage?

Great post and great fish to from a yak. I would have been crappen myself with light line on a big red like that. Mine had 20 pound leader and took a while to wind down befor landing and it was 82cm. I might have to try my yak i got of my father but fish at that size would make it hard to not just fall in as it runs of into the horizon. Well done.

Hey Fogsta,
What a monster, that must have been a reel high getting such a quality snapp from the yak. That would have to be the best snapp i have seen from Redcliffe, the previous one was 84cm caught by ausfish member "Hairy Punt";D ;D . I live 3 kms from that boat ramp, my pb from here is only 63cm, i get the bigger snaps at Mud.
Marty.
Pic attached of Kyle's "Hairy Punt" Redcliife snapp.

That is a fish to remember. Now you have to beat your new P.B this year. You make it sound so damn easy.
"Yeah guys check this out, I caught this on some cotton while I was floating on a piece of plastic"

Thats a very nice bay snapper Graham.
An amazing task on 6lb leader but you kept your cool and won the prize.
Well done mate.
You sure set yourself a challenge on the light gear.
Next you will be using 6lb with a 4 lb trace.
Did you hook the snap in the corner of the mouth?
How much line was left on the spool after the first run?
Must have been a buzz watching the big girl swim away.
Cheers Brent

96 cm snapper better than any electric motor for moving the yak along :). Fabulous catch. Better keep quite on the ledge otherwise it might be on the next list for the greenies :(.

Thanks for the replies guys.
T1,
Mate, if I take you out on the Yak, I will have developed a new source of power. T1 power.
Cobia,
Fishing a ledge in 16-20 feet of water. Try any of the rocky outcrops along the front of redcliffe. Find the bait schools and you will find the fish.
Silent,
I was really disappointed when I uploaded for photo,s to the computer. Bloody dirty lense. That was my PB. Your thinking of the one Fieldy got and I did the report. I will get that 100cm fish one day.
Marty + Jojo,
They are there mate. Just a lot of water in between. If you saw where I was fishing, you would shake your head in disbelief. You could almost cast to it from the rocks, almost.;)
Scalem,
That would constitute cheating wouldn't it. Bugger why did I not think of that.;D
Brent,
Yes corner of the mouth and the hook fell out once in the net. Probably only lost about 100mtrs of line during the tussle. Kept in contatc pretty well using the electric motor. 4lb leader:o Not even going to think about it. The only reason I was on 6lb was that I was too lazy to change it over from my last Bream session. Might have to rethink being lazy me thinks.
