I was wondering if shimano were to release the S factor as a stand alone product how many people would buy it?
I personally think that Shimano's range of soft plastics is fairly limited and not very forth coming in new colours and shapes compared to the gulp range.

Do you mean Squidgies?
Hmm I wouldn't buy S-Factor as a separate product. Dont like the consistency of it too much, not easy to apply as some other types and it looks suspiciously like some Mackeral type burley I have seen in jars elsewhere, although I am sure its different :)

Yes the squidgies range are manufactured by Shimano.
I use the S Factor on all my plastics (except gulp), and all my hard bodies. It hasn't reduced my catch rates and I have noticed bream will take more than one swipe at the lure once its applied. During last years Flathead Classic I was using plastics with S Factor applied and my team mate was fishing with Gulps. In some terrible conditions on the last day I out fished him 2 to 1. (I wish I had used the S Factor on the first 2 days). Read into that what you like, but even if it makes you fish more confidently then its worth the money.
Cheers

I was waiting for someone to put up a post like this::)
Would I buy it ? .... Based on results so far ( probably not)
Are you likely to see S Factor as a stand alone product ...... Probably not ! .... Specially when it enables retailers to charge $4-6 / packet more:P ( & obviously Mr Dunphy is making a nice little margin increase).
To me ..... regardless of development costs etc ...... It is a big marketing coup!!!!
I'd like to know how many packets of the pro range have been sold over the last 12 months ........ You'll soon see the amortisation cost!
Nagg
PS ..... I do buy the pro range! ..... but not for the "S"

the 's' factor is actually pritty good stuff but like everything the fish might be going the gulp one day, squidgies the next, hard bodies the next bla bla bla some of the scents out now are so effective you may as well use bait!

have to agree with Nagg here.
I probably wouldn't buy the stuff, there are some pretty good scents kicking about already, I have used the pro range plastics but I use "Dizzy's " stuff on them.
Just seems like a marketing ploy to me.

I have caught 4 barra at Monduran over 1m on last 2 trips this week, one went 125cm (read freshwater reports) using S Factor on lure. I have fished for 5 hours total for these fish.......IMHO S factor is AWESOME...bring it on seperately. I love it on HB lures as well as sqidgies.

Yep
I've got a small tub of S factor in my backpack, the only reson I don't apply it to my lures as soon as I start fishing for bass is because I forget it's there. When the sun comes up a bit higher and the bite slows down I start thinking of changing lures and using different tactics, then I remember this stuff. I rub a tiny bit on the lure or dip the back treble in the tub and it won't be long before I get my next hit. This has happened time and time again...when I first saw the stuff I thought...hmmmm, this stuff is supposed to attract fish,:-/ but I guess i'm not a fish, so I wouldn't know.
I even rub a little on the blades of my spinnerbaits.
Don't know if it's the smell or the special little fishy pheremone thingies they've cleverley put in it, but I like it, and I'll keep on using it.

S factor is the only scientifically developed attractant on the market which has been specifically designed to appeal to Australian fish species. The product is based on technology developed in aquaculture which we use to get fish to eat medicines they normally would not eat.
The reason why people see a difference when they put it on their lures is that it actually works - it has been proven in the laboratory to attract and excite fish into feeding. No it is not a pheromone based product, our data suggests this is not the way forward - the products on the market using pheromones are not designed for aussie fish and basically, do not work for aussie fish based on our laboratory and aquaculture testing. Beware of other products which have not been tested in the laboratory as well, our results show its easy to make something that actually repels fish. More on this topic here.

PS. The posts in that thread with the technical information on S-factor are posts 28 and 46.

For those who are interested about applications of real science to fishing lures, Shimano have recently indicated they are releasing some of the information related to the development of S-factor. I have uploaded a presentation which contains some of the data here.
