Long shank red ones - small. Pealed prawn as bait. Wide gapes are designed for live bait.

Hooks for whiting, i use the mustard ex-longshank chemicaly sharpened no 4's or 2s witth a nice bloodworm. I know the wide gapes you are talking about Chief they are called Big mouths by Mustard and do wrk catching whiting but best suited to fish like flathead etc.

Number 4 Tru turns, cheap as chips and work really well. I think they are a 756 hook.

I use a size 2 long shank if I'm fishing for sand whiting. I like the bigger hook, because you get a bigger bait on and you're less likely to lose your hook to a small whiting that sucks down the whole lot.

I use #4 Tru-Turns and they are by far the best thing for whiting as I seldom miss a hookup and can't remeber dropping a whiting on them either. Always hooked in the corner of the mouth everytime.

Try the Gamakatsu Worm hook in size 4. It is a very fine medium shank hook with two small keeper barbs. A lot of the gun Whiting fishos seem to prefer short shanked hooks though.
PM Youngy for the drum

Size 4 mustad 92647. They are a 3/4 length long shank with baitholder and they are not too wide in the gape.

Spot-on, youngy knows all on whitng, although the other day i didnt find time to get the hooks youngy told me i used some old Gamakatsu Worm hooks in Size 4 and they seemed to work well as we caught 10 legal whiting, although they do occasionally swallow the thing down to its guts, got em back after we filleted em though, lol. Hope this helps!

I prefer a #4 chemically sharpened red longshank hook but the rigging of the hook is also very important. Here are 2 examples of winning rigs.

I find them a pain in the you know what Chief 1, particular when used with light line. Learn to tie dropper knots instead, much better to use for whiting.

There are a couple of ways to tie one Chief 1.

The quick and dirty method is to type a figure of eight type loop knot, not as strong though;

http://www.fishingcairns.com.au/page6-1.html (first knot, top of page)

Then there is the dropper loop;

ttp://www.fishingcairns.com.au/page6-1.html (3/4 of the way down the page, Dropper Loop)

and then there is the more fancy twisted dropper loop;

http://www.ausfish.com.au/knots/ (2nd last knot down)

I prefer the Dropper Loop, but will tie the figure of 8 loop knot if I am in a hurry.

+1 on the Tru-turns. They will catch your finger everytime you have a lapse in concentration so be careful.
First time I tried the tru-turns my kids landed a dozen toadies easily, they do work well.

My favorite is a mustad viking no 4 if i am fishing for a feed and no 6 in comps, i am trying to get the whiting to swallow the bait without even realizing there is a hook even there.

I agree with you there Youngy, actually bought a packet of them to restock yesterday.
