View Full Version : Shimano Core
I have been thinking about buying a new baitcaster for my upcoming N/T barra trip and the core has caught my attention, does anyone have one?
Also what o/sea's site's are recomended to purchase one from.
I just want a reel for flicking smallish lure's say up to 120 classic's and down to spearhead's this will replace my chronarch which i've had for over 10 year's.
The reel will be going on a c664 GL3 custom,
Thank's Dan..........

Hi Dan,
I have had a core for about 3 months now, and have found it nothing but a joy to use. I mainly use mine for casting 3/8 to 5/8 spinnerbaits & cod lures up to 100mm and it seems to handle everything I have used it for quite well. (no salt but). It casts very well and is super light being magnesium framed. Also remember that the Mg frame will have to be well looked after in a saltwater environment and if you scratch the protective coating then the reel will be prone to corrode rapidly.
If you want the black and red version then you will have to buy locally or from the US, as the jap version of this reel is a silver color from memory.

The Jap Metanium Mg7 ( Silver) is even better than the domestic Core! .... better drag & smoother
They even have a DC (digi control) version now8-)

Ahh so the Metanium is the same with a different paint job eh?what's the difference with the drag, larger diam or different material? Either way i'd proberbly look into a carbontex,it's good to have Erskine's on your doorstep!

There may have been a report on www.tackletour.com (http://www.tackletour.com)
I think the JDM has a higher drag rating & more bearings

Dan5,
I have the core as well as the metanium mg and the metanium mg7. The core has 5 bearings and the metanium has 9 bearings all are very good reels but i reckon the metanium is better value for the money as they are a lot cheaper to get than the core. Then again the core looks good in the red and grey. They all cast the same as they have the same number of bearings on the spool shaft, just the metanium is smoother on the retrieve due to the extra bearings. Have heard they will be releasing the core in the 9 bearing option at a later date.
I went into the tackle shop today and had a closer look at the Core, yeah pretty nice bit of gear but shelf price of $550:o i think they can keep that one.
Bought some new bearing's and a carbontex kit for the ol'cronarch 100 so i'll see how the antiuqe reel go's after a freshen up.
Will keep an eye out for the metanium though it sound's like better value.
Dan.....
